Resonance is defined as “having a lasting presence or effect; enduring.” This aptly entitled body of watercolors presented at this show by Billie Giese, an artist who has shown with Norwood Flynn Gallery since September of 2008, is a result of her recently finished sabbatical for research and artwork in the Spring of 2010. From January to March, she traveled to different geographic sites in Texas to explore the rich variety of natural regions. In April, she was in residence at The Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, Vermont, where she had 4 weeks of concentrated studio time.

Another type of resonance, an acoustical one, is captured in oils on canvas by Shari Hornish in her Norwood Flynn Gallery début. Her unique paintings, inspired by her natural environment, capture this natural world in images that are impressionistic and intensely colorful, and never fail to entrance and surprise the viewer.
About the Artists:
Billie Giese is an artist and educator who divides her time between Austin, Texas where she has a studio near Lake Travis and Illinois, where she teaches at Northern Illinois University. She earned a B.F.A. and a M.F.A. with Distinction in Painting at the University of Kansas. Her studio work includes 2D mixed works, collaborations, performance and video installation that she exhibits in solo and group shows throughout the United States. In her art she explores the intertwining of memory, narrative and a spiritual center.
Shari Hornish has been painting full time since 2003, although she “cannot remember anytime of my life when I wasn’t drawing or painting.” Born in Corpus Christi, she has lived in Dallas since 1983.
One of the best pieces of advice I ever got about painting was “Paint what you love!” I try to do just that - paint the trees, branches, leaves, blossoms, and birds that surround my own home and make it my favorite spot. I’m not interested in painting them exactly as they appear in nature, nor do I want to simplify them to the point of total abstraction. My intent, rather, is to find a happy intersection between nature, paint, and the workings of my own mind.
I tend to see the organic elements I paint as patterns of color, light, and texture - intricate quilts whose myriad pieces of fabric are all in constant flux as day turns to night and one season follows another. My compositions evolve over time, sometimes long periods of time. Each painting develops a bit like a jigsaw puzzle, with each new piece shaped and colored by my brush.
