Spring is here! and we are so grateful to be experiencing the beauty of our first Spring season here in Albuquerque, NM.  We've ended the winter with a personally life changing event that has served as the catalyst for what may become one of the most important program developments in the BECA Foundation's history thus far.  ART + ANIMALS is the working title of this new BECA initiative to combine public arts and cultural programming with animal welfare (rescue, fostering, education and sanctuary if need be for the purposes of reducing the abuse and abandonment of animals and also reduce the euthanasia rates in shelters).

In early January we were unfortunately witness to animal abuse and abandonment and the alarming inhumanity that comes with it.  We were oblivious to its daily occurrence all around us and also ignorant of the epidemic of abandoned and homeless animals throughout the United States and in the state of New Mexico. To make matters worse, New Mexico has an extremely high euthanasia rate for those animals ending up in shelters, those who have temporarily escaped starvation, neglect, horrific abuse and abandonment to then only be killed after living in a small, confined shelter cage for the last few days of their lives.  It is estimated that there are approximately 60 MILLION animals in one or more of these situations every day somewhere in the United States. We helped to rescue one of these animals and her 10 newborn puppies on January 5, 2011.

Our two month rescue and foster journey has brought forth new awareness, learning, research, planning and a desire to connect the dots between art, humanity, ecology and sustainability.  All of the aforementioned has motivated us into action toward figuring out how to utilize BECA programming to enable a more humane society in general.  We are suppose to be stewards of the natural world and all its gifts and yet somewhere along the way humanity has become very, very lost.  We don't know how our society and humanity in general got here but we are compelled to learn why and equally compelled to change it.  The future has to be different.  We have to be responsible and responsive and pro-active or future generations will suffer more than we have.  We've begun to reach out to land owners to try to locate a parcel of land (10+ acres) on which to build the new BECA initiative which has a current working title of ART + ANIMALS.  It will evolve as the project evolves.  If you'd like to learn more or become involved, please visit the ART + ANIMALS project page at: http://www.becaicad.org/art--animals.php

According to Animal Humane New Mexico, it has been estimated that there are over 60 million homeless animals in the United States alone: a staggering rate of more than a million per state.  Even though not all are as lucky, fortunately, there was a happy ending to this particular rescue story for momma + all 10 pups:

The purpose of ‘NEXT’ is to discover and highlight the best in the next wave of contemporary art + design.  For this exhibition, the BECA Foundation enlisted the input of art + design enthusiasts from around the world via online public vote.  Two artists or designers from each of the following four categories have been selected by public vote to be featured in the physical group exhibition, ‘NEXT’:

1.    Film/Video/Sound/3D Animation
2.    Design (graphic design, interactive design, furniture + related accessories, lighting, haute couture, body adornments, architecture, etc.)
3.    Two Dimensional Works (drawings, paintings, prints, photography, illustration, digital art)
4.    Three Dimensional Works (installation, sculpture, textiles or any combination of these or the above)

The ‘NEXT’ exhibition runs through March 19, 2011. Exhibition Hours: Tuesdays – Saturdays from 11am – 5pm.

ART400: Career Development for Artists - 'NEXT': Opening Reception - Join Us This Friday 3/4 The Beca Foundation New Mexico

One of the most frequent requests we've received over the past several years is for our assistance with portfolio reviews and recommendations along with career development guidance.  Since artist career development is not part of current BECA programming, we've always recommended that emerging and early career artists and designers consult with their local and regional arts councils and arts commissions who sometimes offer the practical information being sought.  This recommendation hasn't slowed down the number of incoming requests so we are establishing a short-term pilot program to address this need.

We've taken the most consistent requests and created the series, 'ART400 - The RnR Sessions'. The first session in this series has been created for individual artists and designers.  The session is conducted by BECA Directors, Melissa Roberts and Kurt Schlough, and includes a review of existing art or design career goals and decision making processes along with a series of recommended actions steps toward establishing and achieving future goals. Each session will typically include a current portfolio review as well as a review of current goals and desired future goals along with any existing informational, marketing and outreach materials that the artist or designer currently utilizes. Future small group sessions are being developed but due to the individual focus of Session One, this first session is conducted either remotely from the individual artist or designer's location or in-person here in Albuquerque, NM in a one-to-one format.  The current registration fee is $25 per one hour in-person or remote session.  In-person Session times begin and end promptly to allow adequate accommodation of each registrant. (Information on remote Sessions is provided via email once Registration is completed.)

The Lab AD exhibition is modeled after last year’s BECA Foundation first non-juried, experimental, open exhibition titled, 12x12x122.  It was one of BECA’s most successful exhibitions to date in terms of attendance and online viewing.  For Lab AD, the BECA Foundation has made a concerted effort to broaden the variety of acceptable works, including 2-D, 3-D and video.  There will be 20 artists, architects and/or designers selected from those exhibiting to have their works featured online at www.BECAICAD.org  beginning February 8th.  Works were not required to conform to any particular medium, style, theme or concept. 

BECA is an acronym for Bridge for Emerging Contemporary Art and the core belief system at The BECA Foundation is that “New art + new design fuels the best of what’s yet to come on this planet.”  With a growing international BECA network now numbered above 30,000, it is more important than ever for BECA to ensure that in addition to hosting the physical exhibition, that the aforementioned selection of works by the 20 featured artists, architects + designers be made available online at www.BECAICAD.org for those who are unable to attend in person. Providing global online accessibility to its exhibitions has been a focal point for BECA since its first exhibition was held in January 2008. Some works of art + design exhibited in the Lab AD exhibition will be available for sale. The BECA Foundation will receive 25% of the sale price and the artist, architect or designer will receive 75% of the sale price. Registration fees and sales proceeds received by The BECA Foundation are used to further its international public arts programming and to help sustain operations.

The BECA Foundation is pleased to present Sublime Affliction, a solo exhibition of new sculptural and wearable works by Jenn Parnell, at New Studio A.D., 312 Rosemont Ave, NE, Albuquerque, NM 87102.

     

When discussing the development of Sublime Affliction, Jenn Parnell states:  “Imagery of cellular pathology inspires Sublime Affliction, a collection of wearable amuletic objects that addresses the intersection between health, belief and body image. The handheld and interactive objects, supported by explorations of form and pattern, speak to both the psychological aspects of disease and the faith mechanisms necessary to cope with diagnoses. Cellular imagery inspires decorative patterns for site specific installation on the body summoning questions of beauty. The pieces in Sublime Affliction emphasize the intimacy of jewelry and work with the dual nature of the private versus public aspect of jewelry. The pieces grow from the concept of jewelry as an intimate item that tangibly affects the person wearing it in a physical sense as well as psychologically. I set out to make pieces that were definitely jewelry, but were worn less as decoration for an outfit or appearance, but as supplements and mutations of the body itself.”
