smART Talk: Stephanie Dotson, Printmaking Beyond Process

The artist Stephanie Dotson will be speaking on the conceptual territory of printmaking echoed in non-print work. Stephanie Dotson subverts the narratives inherent in her processes with a mad arsenal of working techniques to create a new patois where opposing realities parallel narratives from her own life.


Solo exhibitions of her work include the Three Walls Gallery in Chicago, Vox Populii in Philadelphia, and Trace Gallery in Athens, GA. She has completed several artist residencies including the Bemis Center in 2004 and has received full Joan Mitchell fellowships to residencies at the Vermont Studio Center in 2007 and the Atlantic Center for the Arts In 2010. Dotson is presently Chair of the art department at the Santa Barbara City College in Santa Barbara, CA, where she lives and works in her studio. Stephanie studied poster and print arts in Havana, Cuba as a student in 2006, where she plans to return in Summer 2010 as the director of her printmaking study abroad program.

The smART Talks program serves to increase awareness of local artists through a series of three talks a year by local artists about their work, careers, and creative process. The series, begun in 1996, was created in honor of Helen Rosenberg, mother of Susan Rose, and grandmother of Julie Weiner, and pays tribute to artists who live and work in the Santa Barbara area.

Forum Lounge: casebolt and smith,  O(h)

casebolt and smith skirt the line between humorous and profound with a cheeky meta-dance performance at CAF.

In O(h), casebolt and smith demonstrate what dancers can, can’t, and won’t do as a commentary on their limitations as a duet company and their fear of becoming unoriginal. Speaking directly to the audience and singing while dancing, the performance is layered with pop culture references and results in a fast-paced, complex, and hilarious glimpse into the minds and pants of the performers.

Founded in 2006, Los Angeles-based theater duo casebolt and smith is composed of Liz Casebolt and Joel Smith.  Both Casebolt and Smith received M.F.A.s in experimental choreography from University of California Riverside, Riverside, CA.  Casebolt received her B.F.A., New York University, NY and Smith received his B.A., University of California Davis, Davis, CA. The duo has received choreography commissions, performed at many venues including Vancouver International Dance Festival, Canada; Joyce SoHo, New York, NY; Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, CA; and Diavolo Dance Space, Los Angeles, CA; and taught master classes at various Southern California colleges.

Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum (CAF) and Kunin Wines co-host an evening of ghoulish delights! Judges Kathryn Graham, C’est Cheese co-owner; John Palminteri, television journalist; and Mayor Helene Schneider will be on hand to select the most devious and delightful pumpkins, and award an array of wonderful prizes. With prize categories for both children and adults this event is fun for all ages! 

Kunin Wines, known for some of the most exceptional vintages on the Central Coast, will offer tastings of their premiere selections, with a special focus on Autumnal pairings. Also, get ready for Halloween with FREE face painting and hair tinseling from Paul Mitchell The School professional stylists!

Interested in getting your art exhibited in a gallery or museum setting, and want to know what to expect when working with a curator?  Join us to learn what curators look for when choosing an exhibiting artist, and hear from professional artists and curators themselves.  Moderated by Miki Garcia, Head Curator at Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum, the panel will include Heather Jeno Silva, curator of the Forum Lounge performance series and assistant director of the UCSB Arts & Lectures series; Alejandro Casazi, UCSB professor, artist, and curator of PLATFORM; and Warren Schultheis, artist and curator of the annual SUPER SANTA BARBARA show.  If you are an art student or a self taught artist and you would like to be exhibiting, this event is not to be missed!

Stop by the Library to view figurative paintings and drawings by Jan Wurm.  Working between the Bay Area & Los Angeles, Wurm regularly exhibits both nationally and internationally.  Her large-scale paintings incorporate a gestural line with vibrantly colored impasto surfaces, while the psychological complexities and situations of the "actors" of each canvas beckon the viewer to remain.  Many of Wurm’s sketchbooks are also on display, revealing the artist's process and visual documentation of her immediate surroundings in a variety of locations.  Artwork is exhibited on the 2nd & 3rd floors of the Library.

The opening reception will be held on Thursday, August 25th, at 5:30 PM in KL 355.  Celebrate the first day of instruction by coming to the Library to meet the artist, enjoy a snack and view the art!  Open to the public.

Los Angeles, CA – LeBasse Projects :: Chinatown is proud to announce ‘Golden Structure,’ a solo exhibition from Los Angeles based artist, Ken Garduno.

In his new body of work, Garduno continues to explore themes of how people respond to one another, particularly in relationships. Influenced by the overly dramatic Spanish Novelas, Garduno puts into question our own relationships and suggests that real life can easily turn into soap opera-like situations.
Garduno sheds light on our tendencies to construct unrealistic expectations of our loved ones and explores the disintegration of these ideals. The exhibition title, ‘Golden Structure’ is based on an idea of this precious structure that slowly ages and falls apart.

In Garduno’s new exhibition, the artist returns with a matured body of watercolor and ink paintings. Known more by his monotone color scheme, Garduno’s characters are brought to life with a refreshing Technicolor palette. The artist shows us the difficulties in maintaining love and its relationships, as well as the tendencies to take things too far and serious. The central figures create an unsettling dialog riddled with jealousy, betrayal and a pronounced sense of sexual tension.

About Ken Garduno
Ken Garduno graduated in 2006, with honors in illustration from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. After graduating, Ken pursued a career as a freelance illustrator/gallery artist. His work has been shown in galleries internationally, as well as in various publications, album art, and t-shirt designs. His clients include the New York Times, LA Weekly, LA Citybeat, SF Weekly, Esquire Russia, and the Pasadena Weekly.

Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum presents smART Salons: There’s No Place Like Home, a discussion of the meaning of “home.”

No question about it, the word “home” connotes an immediately identifiable group of ideas and images.  For those of us fortunate enough to have grown up in houses owned by our parents, they were the backdrop for our childhood memories—the places we played and argued, hung our artwork, and marked the door jam with pencil as we grew taller. For better or worse, the “homes” of our childhood represent to many of us a measure of the success our parents attained, an outward expression of how hard work pays off in comfort, safety, and the respect of the community.

Yet, recent reports state that Gen Xer’s are earning less than their parent’s generation, challenging a long-held belief that each generation will be better off than the one that preceded it. Part of the American dream has included the idea of home ownership as a means of improving the quality of life. But, with the percentage of U.S. households that own a home at its lowest point since 1998, what place does the home play in this new era? Who gets to own a home now, especially in a place like Santa Barbara? What are the alternatives to home ownership and how do we measure success?

Join us at the Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum (CAF) smART Salon Sunday, June 26, 2:00 pm as the Independent’s own Isabelle Walker moderates a panel discussion exploring the meaning “home” in Santa Barbara. A variety of perspectives will be shared in the examination of the complexities of this seemingly simple term.  Invited panel guests include Casa Esperanza Executive Director Mike Foley, U.C.S.B. Economics Professor Charles Stuart, and Faculty member at the Southern California Institute of Architecture Peter Zellner. Following the panel discussion, a short presentation of images of alternative housing developments will be presented by Peter Zellner.  ADMISSION IS FREE

Forum Lounge: Race, Sex, & Tattoos: The Kip Fulbeck Experience

Filmmaker and artist, Kip Fulbeck, traveled the country photographing individuals and having them hand-write their responses to the question "What are you?"  In this multimedia performance, he shares these images and the stories behind them, weaving together spoken word, film, photography, and pop culture to explore multiracial identity, tattoo culture, and contemporary America.  Fulbeck is the author of several books including Part Asian, 100% Hapa; Permanence: Tattoo Portraits; and Mixed: Portraits of Multiracial Kids as well as the director of a dozen short films. He has been featured on CNN, MTV, and PBS and has performed at hundreds of venues throughout the world. Fulbeck is a Professor of Art and Affiliate Faculty in Asian American Studies and Film & Media Studies at the University of California Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara, CA.

Forum Lounge: Race, Sex, & Tattoos: The Kip Fulbeck Experience and Book Signing

Santa Barbara-based artist, Kip Fulbeck performs Race, Sex, & Tattoos: The Kip Fulbeck Experience, at CAF,  exploring themes of diversity and America’s mixed-race identities!

Filmmaker and artist, Kip Fulbeck, traveled throughout the United States to photograph its diverse populace and asked each subject to hand-write a response to the question “What are you?”  At CAF, he will present a multimedia performance that weaves together these collected stories and images with spoken word, film, photography, and pop culture to explore multiracial identity, tattoo culture, and contemporary America.  There will be a book signing following the performance.

Home In The Weeds: New Work from Kevin Cyr Preview Link 941 Geary

941 Geary is pleased to present Home in the Weeds, a brand-new collection of installations and 2D work by Brooklyn-based artist Kevin Cyr. The show will be Kevin’s first solo project at 941 Geary, with an opening reception on Saturday, April 30, 2011 from 6-9 pm. The exhibition is free and open to the public for viewing through June 4. Home in the Weeds is a personal reaction to the fragility of our current society. After the worst economic downturn since the Depression, a feeling of imminent doom remains. With jobs scarce, and government safety nets shrinking, one misfortune — a layoff, an injury, or missed payment — can transform a person's life beyond recognition. Home in the Weeds examines the idea of shelter as a safe haven for a future worst-case scenario as well as more optimistic notions of home and self-preservation.

A series of large-scale installations explore the idea of shelters at different stages or circumstances. Each serves a different function and ideas of mobility, concealment and protectionism play a role in their designs. A small, tag-along camper towed by an old Raleigh 3-speed bike is the most romantic of the installations. It expresses nostalgia for innocence and exploration and is stocked with items reminiscent of my childhood camping trips. A vintage tent is a transportable, but immobile shelter. Its canvas exterior disguises a built-out room with wood flooring, wainscoting walls and a wood burning stove. A third structure is a stationary shelter constructed from discarded materials. Old plywood, rusty sheet metal and various objects scattered around the piece allow it to be completely concealed if necessary. Protectionism plays the largest role in this urban fort. It’s equipped with a CB radio for communication with allies, peep holes for scanning the surroundings and weapons for a last resort. A site-specific installation — built into an oil pit used by the former smog shop occupant — resembles a bomb shelter. Stocked with the barest of survival necessities, this installation recalls the worse of doomsday prophecies. Themes of the exhibition are also explored through drawings, paintings, photographs, and silkscreen editions. Portrait paintings identify characters that inhabit the tag-along camper and the tent house; still life paintings celebrate specific objects included in the shelters; and diagrammatical drawings emphasize the design of each piece.

Kevin Cyr was born in Edmundston, NB, Canada, in 1976 and grew up in the paper mill town of Madawaska, Maine. Cyr received his BFA from Massachusetts College of Art in Boston and now lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, and has been published widely. He has always been interested in the industrial landscape and vehicles that have defined America. For the past couple of years, Cyr’s work has been focused on vehicles he has encountered on the streets of his neighborhood, as well as places he has traveled within the US and abroad. While the car remains an iconic status symbol in contemporary culture, Cyr finds beauty in derelict and unkempt vehicles, in particular, those often associated with working-class society.
