Artist Information – Texas Commission on the Arts – Texas State Artist Selection Process

Every two years, the Texas Commission on the Arts (TCA) oversees the Texas State Artist selection process. Artists are selected in four categories - State Poet Laureate, State Musician, State Two-dimensional Artist and State Three-dimensional Artist. TCA solicits nominations from the public and works with the Texas Poet Laureate, State Musician and State Artist Committee, the group responsible for selecting Texas State Artists. Members of the committee are appointed by the Governor, Lieutenant Governor and Speaker of the House of Representatives. Once the committee selects the artists that will represent Texas for the next two years, the Texas Legislature officially bestows the titles in a ceremony at the Capitol in Austin.

TCA will open the Texas State Artist nomination process in September. Any Texas citizen may nominate an artist for the title of Texas State Artist. Complete information will be available on the TCA website and in the fall 2010 issue of artsTEXAS. Questions on the Texas State Artist process may be directed to TCA’s director of marketing & communications at gaye@arts.state.tx.us This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
