Earth and Ether: Pamela Burnley-Schol opens Saturday, February 26, 2011 with an Artist’s Reception from 6-8pm.

Norwood Flynn Gallery is pleased to showcase “Earth and Ether,” new work by Pamela Burnley-Schol. Pamela, new to Norwood Flynn Gallery, is a 20 year member of University of North Texas College of Art and Design faculty. This work focuses on the use of cloudscape, landscape and still life genre as vehicles for her interest in personal icons.  Burnley-Schol’s paintings are intricately crafted and tangible three-dimensional objects, made from wood, gilded with 22k gold leaf, and painted in oil pigment. The show continues through March 19, 2011.

All shows are free and open to the public.  The public may call 214-351-3318 or visit www.norwoodflynngallery.com for information.

Pamela Burnley-Schol- Artist Statement:  My recent work focuses on the use of cloudscape and landscape as personal icon.  I am especially interested in examining the iconic possibilities for the space between earth and sky, between the physical and the ethereal.  I have also often used portraiture and still life genre as vehicles for the same interest in personal icon.

Like the ancient tradition of orthodox icon paintings, the modern snapshot has often been a sign or representation that stands for its’ object by virtue of a resemblance or analogy to it.  I believe that ordinary things can become icons, windows revealing something greater than the thing itself.

It is my intent to elevate these ordinary snapshot subjects so that they convey to the public that sense of deep, but perhaps intangible significance that was held by the original viewer.  To quote L’Engle, “An icon is more than a simile; it is a metaphor, containing within itself something of the indescribable, so that the need for description vanishes.”

Each painting is an intricately crafted and tangible three-dimensional object, made from wood, Gilded with 22k gold leaf, and painted in oil pigment.  I have combined common materials such As wood with precious gold leaf, and the physical unframed structure of the painted panel is a reference to altarpieces and icons found in traditional liturgical art, in order to celebrate as icon,
those fleeting details of daily life that are often considered ordinary.

Ashes to Art Update Funeria Art Honors Life Sonoma County

FUNERIA Publishes Price List for 5th Biennial International Ashes to Art® Exhibition

5th biennial Ashes to Art blogsite banner
Happy New Year!

If you have been one of the more than 17,000 visitors to see FUNERIA's Ashes to Art® exhibition online since October 2010, you may have wondered why we haven't posted prices earlier for all of the spectacular original artworks in our 5th biennial exhibition. Here's why:

When neighbors, friends, supporters and hundreds of visitors arrive from nearby cities and throughout the world to attend our international exhibitions at FUNERIA's Sonoma County Art Honors Life® gallery, we believe their special effort deserves not only a warm welcome but a special advantage--one of which is a first look at the prices that each of the artists has set for their own work.

http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=a5jo4tbab&et=1104276352446&s=4217&e=0016xfS6cJbRhOv2ZTH2KAJW9t8Y2N_0E1OtTACINF9Ea0-xfHj20CBU1_Inn6hlCzj1BV6w049Tiro4v9wovwiAHuWQ4vK3KTYGuTnz5QTCDoEz6rKNJ-Vx8QRwD5OSbhWQtz489wcQAsLApuAKoGHhRB5iF0oM1lTwN4ofRdVZsE=
While the Internet offers many interactive opportunities for the curious mind, we know that sculpture and multi-dimensional forms can only be fully appreciated in museums, galleries, in public and private venues where we can experience their mass or their delicacy and feel their impact in relation to ourselves.

Textures, scale, colors and fine details may be represented fairly well online, but stepping into a physical environment, touching the work, recognizing why both the setting and artworks were created, and why a distinguished panel of arts professionals selected them, requires a trip. So, we reward those who travel to our exhibitions with a bonus. They are the first to know that some artists have set surprisingly low prices for their work. They learn that all of the superbly crafted funerary urns and personal memorial artworks, including those at the highest end, are more fairly priced than they expected to find while seeking a unique means to honor a life they've loved.

Now it's your turn to find out that one of the highest scoring artworks among the jurors, which was also the second highest scoring People's Choice contest vote recipient, is a stunning, sophisticated, and exquisitely crafted original artwork priced at $400. We've checked our documents countless times to be sure an extra zero wasn't missing.
You'll also find pieces priced at several thousand more, and we don't always have the very best photos posted to represent them in their full glory. Ask us if they're still available however, and if they are, ask to see better images so that we can help convey some of the details that warrant their price... many times over. We'll tell you about the artists themselves--their inspiration, education and major awards they may have received.

Artists, after all, like to sell and share their work, just as we all hope to be acknowledged for our talents, enjoy comforts, educate our children well and contribute to our communities. FUNERIA is proud to represent artists in the process--to promote, advertise and champion them in any way we can. We know, though, that many more hours, expensive tools and materials were required to create each of these pieces than their price reflects. Imagine not just a 40 hour work week but a hundred and more hours spent in shaping, carving, hammering these beautiful objects. To say nothing of the creative process that precedes their production, to the time spent inspecting, perfecting, to ensuring that their work is the very best it can possibly be.

This is, after all, work that is specifically created to serve a special purpose. It is artwork that is intended to honor a unique life. It may be for an adult with a lifelong passion for exploring the natural world and universe--seeking beauty and studying its secrets; a pet that has retrieved every tennis ball you've thrown, carried you on its back or helped keep you warm at night. It may be for a child who hadn't enjoyed nearly enough of life, but knew the beat and fullness of their mother's heart. It could be for you. What will your urn look like?

So, there you have it. If this isn't a compelling enough statement on the value of seeing, touching and having meaningful, evocative, original art and superbly crafted and designed memorial artwork in your own life, then you'll just have to take a closer look. Open the price list and ask us how we can help you acquire exactly what you want and surely deserve.

Here's to your beautiful life!

What is Brian Nolan Up To?

Sonia

Pretty cool thing happened to me recently. I sat down to watch HBO's Treme for the first time. As the show went to it's opening credit sequence I started to notice that the images were more and more about how the flood waters damaged the city of New Orleans.  This cool sense came over me as the music played and the images passed by, I just felt that one of my images was about to pop up on the screen - sure enough - there was one.  If you watch the opening credit sequence my image is used below the credit for the co-executive producer.

I assume they purchased the image from one of the stock image banks I send my work out to.  Years ago having your work on TV would have meant a decent check in the mail - the internet killed that by reducing the use fees and allowing broader use licenses to buyers.  Years ago I would have been upset that my work was used and that I was never notified - bad breach in protocol but I suppose that's the world we live in - you put your work out there for others to see and it's out of your hands.  I'm not upset because I'm finally getting to use the words "AS SEEN ON TV" with my work.  How cool is that?

I'm sending a print down to a charity auction in New Orleans hosted by HBO.  The cause is a good one - helping musicians. Here's the image as SEEN ON TV.

David A. Dreyer: Transitional Planes Valley House Gallery Dallas

We are pleased to announce our next exhibition

David A. Dreyer: Transitional Planes

Saturday, February 12, 6:00-8:30 pm

David A. Dreyer was born in Dallas in 1958, and earned his BFA and MFA at Southern Methodist University. He was a recipient of the Moss/Chumley Award from the Meadows Museum and has had solo exhibitions at The McKinney Avenue Contemporary in Dallas and The Grace Museum in Abilene. Dreyer is currently Adjunct Instructor, Technical Supervisor and Safety Coordinator for the Division of Art at SMU. This is his third solo exhibition at Valley House Gallery.

Dreyer's expression of the essence of line, gesture and geometry as observed in nature and his articulation of the transitions and dynamics of these elements shape this exhibition of abstract paintings and sculpture.

His paintings and sculpture are wholly interconnected; one influences the other. Dimensions of space are in flux. Planes and plains morph. His palette is cohesively rooted in nature. Throughout, his craftsmanship is refined and subtle. For Dreyer, gesture is not only the essence of a statement, but also a means to finding that statement.

Preview the exhibition at http://www.valleyhouse.com/main.asp?page=24

The exhibition continues through March 12, 2011

The Four Tops-I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)

Artist Interview: Perry Burns

What is your name: Perry Burns

Do you have a formal art education or are you a self taught artist: Formal. I went to Rhode Island School of Design.

What is the style of your pieces: I call it "organic geometry," a hybrid of Islamic pattern & abstract expressionism.

What is the medium in which you work: Oil on Canvas and Prints on Paper.

What started you on your path as an artist: I've been painting since I was 5 and have always loved it.

What is one of the most important things that art has brought to your life: A sense of God. I am not religious, but when I paint there is clearly some other greater force that comes into play, a force that feels like it often moves through me or around me when I paint. I feel that it is that force or energy that transcends the materiality of paint, and transforms the material, movement & intention into something much greater. That is the magic of painting and, indeed all the Arts.

What is your favorite genre of art besides the one you work in: Music, architecture, photography & "guerilla" art.

Do you have art showings, and if so what are they typically like: Yes, often. One person & group shows. The one person shows are based on ideas I have about the bridge between painting & spirituality, art & politics, aesthetics & culture.

Do you have a certain set of clothes you make art in: Yes, both clothes and shoes I can get plenty of paint on.

What has been the most frustrating part of being an artist? The current business of Fine Art - In the current gallery system galleries hold all the cards. There are some fairly standard practices but nothing is regulated and artists really have very little power. There is a very real reason people say, "starving artistbecause it is very hard to actually make money as an artist until an artist reaches the upper echelons of the art world.

What is your favorite sandwich of all time: Interesting question(?) A "Combo" from Villa - East Hampton, NY

Has this year brought about any changes in your work, and if so what are they: Major changes, although it is the result of years worth of developing some new ideas and work.

Who is your favorite artist alive or dead: Currently 2 who are alive - Mark Bradford, a painter in LA, and JR, a french photographer & guerilla artist.

What is the most moving piece of artwork that you have seen in person: Bernini's 'Apollo & Daphne', The Blue Mosque in Istanbul, Gehry's Disney Concert Hall in LA.

Do you have any animals, and what do they think of your work: 1 cat - As he mostly eats, sleeps & poops, I'm not sure he even realizes my work exists.

Do you have any upcoming exhibitions you would like to share with us: Yes, an exhibit titled, '3 Visions' @ the Flinn Gallery - 101 West Putnam Ave. Greenwich, CT. The Opening Reception is Thurs. Feb. 3rd  6-8pm.

The World is a Vampire - Smashing Pumpkins

Artist Interview: Derrick White

What is your name:  Derrick White

Do you have a formal art education or are you a self taught artist:  I have a Master of Fine Arts degree (painting & drawing) and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree (painting & drawing) both from the University of North Texas, Denton, TX.

What is the style of your pieces:  Somewhat organized chaos-ism.

What is the medium in which you work:  I’ll work in anything I can get my hands on but primarily acrylic and water based mixed media.

What started you on your path as an artist:  I drew cartoons and pop icons all through childhood but actually graduated high school wanting to ranch cattle.  I was inspired to pursue painting and drawing in an art appreciation class taken at Cedar Valley College in Lancaster, TX and by my professor Randy Brodnax (http://www.randybrodnax.com/ ).  I had a clash of art and agriculture.  These days when I’m at an art opening, I feel pretty confident I’m the only person in the room who’s ever castrated a hog before.

What is one of the most important things that art has brought to your life:  Passion.  With all its trials and tribulations I still love making art, pushing paint around and getting lost in the zone.  I can’t imagine not creating.

What is your favorite genre of art besides the one you work in:  I love good and interesting movies and I teach a Film Studies Art Appreciation class at Tyler Junior College.

Do you have art showings, and if so what are they typically like: Having a solo show is like standing in a room full of people in your underwear and having to make up fake answers to things you thought were observable and self-evident…but with refreshments.

Do you have a certain set of clothes you make art in:  I have drips of paint on every single article of clothing I own, much to the exasperation of my wife Alicia.

What has been the most frustrating part of being an artist?
Keeping the flying monkeys out of my paint.

What is your favorite sandwich of all time:  I don’t know if it counts as a sandwich but a Double-Double from the In-N-Out Burger is my fondest memory from a trip to Los Angeles, CA.

Has this year brought about any changes in your work, and if so what are they:
No major changes taking place but I am real excited about the latest pieces I’ve made.  My favorite painting is always the one I just finished.

Who is your favorite artist alive or dead:
Living - Dallas artist David Bates (I love his paintings yet hate his sculptures, which gives me hope).  Artist friend and colleague Paul Jones (Tyler).  Paul and I have been sharing and stealing each other’s ideas for years (that flying monkeys line is his).  Dead - Louise Nevelson (her sculptures of random and discarded objects have an unexplainable power).

What is the most moving piece of artwork that you have seen in person: I wasn’t expecting it but James Turrell’s sky space, Tending, (Blue) at the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas knocked my socks right off and it’s just an enclosed white room with a hole in the roof. http://www.nashersculpturecenter.org/James/Turrell/Introduction.aspx

Do you have any animals, and what do they think of your work: We have a little Shih Tzu and she couldn’t care less about my work.  Gus, our shepherd /sheltie who passed away 12 months ago after 12 years, his conversations and opinions I really miss.

Do you have any upcoming exhibitions you would like to share with us: I am participating in 15 Minutes of Fame: Pop Culture.  The exhibition is on view through February 8, 2011 at Gallery Main Street  110 W Erwin Downtown Tyler, TX http://www.heartoftyler.com/PopCultureJan2011_000.htm and I have 20 ‘New Paintings’ on display through March 4, 2011 at the Tyler Junior College West Campus at 1530 South Southwest Loop 323 Tyler, TX.
