Call for Artists

From December 29, 2011 – March 18, 2012, CoCA will present its 22^nd annual juried exhibition seeking work from emerging as well as established artists in a wide variety of visual media. While there is no theme this year as such, we’re hunting for work that experiments and explores in general, crossing disciplinary boundaries, challenging established notions of time and space, cultural production, and the objet d’art itself.

CoCA has presented the Annual since 1989, each time inviting an independent juror to select the work from among the entries received. For this year’s 22^nd anniversary of the show, CoCA is proud to have Gary Hill as juror.

Internationally recognized for the broad scope of his work, ranging from media arts to sculpture, from installation to poetics, Gary Hill has explored the ineffable relationship between text, sound, and image for nearly 40 years.  A MacArthur Grant recipient and Fellow at both the Rockefeller and Guggenheim Foundations, he also received the Leone d’Oro Prize for Sculpture at the Venice Biennale (1995) and the Kurt Schwitters Prize (2000), to name a few of his many accolades. Locally he was recently awarded

a 2011 Arts Innovator Award from Artist Trust and an honorary doctorate from Cornish College of the Arts (2011). Born in Santa Monica in 1951, Hill also grew up surfing and remains informed by the restless energy of the sea itself.

The deadline for submissions is midnight on Dec.4, 2011. There will be an opening reception on Thursday, December 29, at CoCA’s Georgetown gallery located inside the Seattle Design Center at 5701 6th Avenue South, Seattle WA 98108. (http://www.seattledesigncenter.com/)

Artists in any region and any country are welcome to submit. Two-dimensional, three-dimensional and multi-media work will be considered. A $500 first prize and a $250 second prize will be awarded by the juror, as well as up to two “honorable mentions” featured on CoCA’s website. A catalog of the show will feature artists’ statements, biographies, and images, as well as an introductory essay by Gary Hill. In addition to having all participating artists archived on CoCA’s website, there will also be an opportunity to place work in CoCA’s new online store.

Applications are electronic and can be made entirely online at

Be sure to enter “Annual” when asked what you are submitting for. Deadline: electronic submission completed as of midnight on December 4, 2011. The online system will ask you to:

• Submit up to 10 images of the artwork for consideration. Format is jpg file, max. dimension of 800 pixels in either direction. The system will ask you to include a description of the artwork (artwork title, dimensions, medium and year of creation).

• Enter a Work Description (500 words): Consider the body of work as a unit, indicating whether new work or old, part of a series or not, commissioned, proposed, previously exhibited, result of a collaboration, etc. If there are special requirements associated with the display of your work (including budgetary and/or space/time constraints), please indicate these here.

• Upload an Artist’s statement (250 words): This will appear in the catalog.

• Upload an Artist’s biography (200 words), including year of birth, city of origin, awards, honors, shows, degrees. This will also appear in the catalog.

• $15 (US) entry fee (PayPal). Make sure to note the artist name in the payment.

Offers will be made through email, accompanied by an Art Loan Agreement and additional information by December 11; artists must confirm by email by December 13.

Call for Show Proposals: Soil Seattle

SOIL is now accepting proposals!

Schedule:From June through December 2011 (seven shows)

 

Stipend: $200 per show

Deadline: Postmark, or hand deliver by by 5pm, January 21, 2011

How To Apply

Project Description: Describe in a paragraph the themes and content of the show. It is imperative your description is clear and that it leaves us with a strong impression of what to expect from the exhibition you propose. Include project title, how many pieces in the show, media, and other important details on your plans for the exhibition. We are interested in compelling ideas, concisely stated.

Application: Fill out the PDF application, including the Work Description List. It is available to download and print here.

Work Sample: Enclose up to 15 digital images on a CD, including samples of work by all participating artists to provide a sense of the proposed show. Digital image files should be saved on the CD as the artists' last name and numbered corresponding to the Work Description List, such as Jones_01.jpg, Jones_02.jpg, Smith_03.jpg. Size images at 1200 pixels on the longest dimension. Do not embed images into PDF files. For video samples we will accept DVD and CD-ROM formats. Images are crucial to our understanding of your proposal. Your Project Description should function as the backbone that connects your image samples together.

Work Description List: List details of the work corresponding with their number, including artist’s name, title, dimensions of work, materials used and date executed for each piece.

Support Materials: We recommend but do not require enclosing a resume and one page or less artist statement from each participating artist. Please do not include reviews, publications, or other additional items.

SASE: Your materials will not be returned unless indicated on the application and accompanied by a self-addressed stamped envelope (with adequate stamps, not metered postage).

The Fine Print

SOIL provides a stipend ($200) to assist with postcard printing & postage, and pays for vinyl wall lettering. All additional costs for the show, including shipping and insuring of artworks, reception food and drink, etc., are the responsibility of the curator. Additionally, the curator is responsible for installing and de-installing the show within the given schedule.
SOIL assists with writing and distribution of a press release, access to the mailing list, keeping the gallery staffed and general promotion on the website.

Sales

Sales occur directly between the artist or curator and the buyer. Gallery sitters are happy to put the artist or curator and buyer in touch with each other. SOIL encourages a 15%-30% donation of sales. While this is not required, we operate on a modest budget and appreciate donations. Our percentage is low because we are not focused on sales or supported by them. We are foremost dedicated to our mission to support emerging and innovative art in Seattle.

2011 Vera Art Gallery Call to Artists

The Vera Project
Ver(a)rt Gallery (housed in the central part of the Vera Project in Seattle Center) is currently holding a Call to Artists to select artists for group and solo shows during 2011. We are dedicated to exhibiting work from new, local, and/or underrepresented artists. Emerging artists and curators of all ages are encouraged to apply, with a cohesive body of work or themed group exhibition. Examples of a body of work that is in progress, along with a written proposal, will be considered as well.
