Artist Interview: Lori Lipsman



What is your name: Lori Lipsman

Do you have a formal art education or are you a self taught artist: Yes, I have a BFA and an MFA

What is the style of your pieces: specific to a concept

What is the medium in which you work: specific to a concept

What started you on your path as an artist: was lost in science and math

What is one of the most important things that art has brought to your life: the ability to change

What is your favorite genre of art besides the one you work in: I have no favorite, not even the one I work in

Do you have art showings, and if so what are they typically like: yes, I prefer installations but also show “pieces”

Do you have a certain set of clothes you make art in: any old and stained

What has been the most frustrating part of being an artist? I took a very long time off of showing so that I could develop without that as an influence and when I was ready to have work shown again it has been difficult to get back in. I did not realize it would be this way and that age would be such a handicap

What is your favorite sandwich of all time: pesto, tomato and cheese

Has this year brought about any changes in your work, and if so what are they: 

Who is your favorite artist alive or dead: Robert Irwin

What is the most moving piece of artwork that you have seen in person: Robert Irwin’s cut-out windows at MCASD

Do you have any animals, and what do they think of your work: 3 cats and they could care less
