Artist-in-Residence Risley Residential College for the Creative and Performing Arts at Cornell University

(Ithaca NY)

Artist-in-Residence

Risley Residential College for the Creative and Performing Arts at Cornell University is seeking working professionals from all creative fields for the position of Artist-in-Residence (AIR). The appointment is for 2011-2012 Academic Year (August 8, 2011 through May 31, 2012), with the possibility of renewal for the next academic year (two year maximum).

We are looking for people who are open to living with college students and enthusiastic about sharing their talents and experience.  The AIR position helps facilitate and expand upon students’ creativity.   The major responsibilities of the AIR include planning, implementing, and attending student programming.  The content and theme of the programming can vary from demonstrations of creative techniques and artist/writing workshops to improvisational performances with student musicians.

About Risley Residential College:
Risley is a residential college of approximately 200 students whose backgrounds and academic interests vary.  Most of the students living in Risley are not fine or performing arts majors, but choose to live in the building due to their interest in developing their artistic abilities in their spare time.

Compensation:
The AIR will receive housing in a suite within the building (two rooms + bathroom), a meal plan, and a small stipend.  Due to the fact that this is not a full time position, benefits are not included and relocation expenses are not provided.  Please note also that studio space is not provided.  However, the building has facilities for painting, printmaking, digital video editing, woodworking, ceramics, sewing, audio recording, jewelry, and stained glass as well as an 81 seat black-box theater, a black and white darkroom, a dining hall, performance space, practice rooms and a dance studio.

Qualifications:
All applicants must have an undergraduate degree (preferably in an arts-related field), and be legally allowed to work in the US. Prior to obtaining the position, candidates must successfully pass a background check. Most importantly, we are seeking applicants who can work independently and thrive in a college residential environment.

Application Process:
Please prepare a cover letter, resume, a portfolio of your work (10 piece limit), and 3 letters of reference.  In your cover letter please comment on your experience living in a college residence hall, why you are interested in obtaining the Risley AIR position as well as some examples of programs/workshops you have facilitated in the past. You may send your application materials to: risley@cornell.edu
