Artist Interview: Jacqueline Chubirka

"sleeps with the fishes" 30x30, oil on canvas

What is your name: Jacqueline Chubirka

Do you have a formal art education or are you a self taught artist: I am currently working on my BFA at The Academy of Art University. My experience prior to that is mostly self taught and learned in the trenches of commercial illustration and advertising design.

What is the style of your pieces: I work in a style I would call contemporary realism. Some paintings verge on photorealism but I would not categorize my work to be photorealistic. I feel my commercial background influences my aesthetic, adding graphic style nuances in composition and paint application.

What is the medium in which you work: I work in both acrylics and oils. I choose the medium I think will best accomplish the desired effect I want to achieve. Each medium has its unique qualities, each offers a different way of working.

What started you on your path as an artist: I was always interesting in doing something creative whether it was building a model with my dad or playing the flute in junior high. Then, as a freshman in high school I took an art class and realized that creating art was something I felt good about.

What is one of the most important things that art has brought to your life: A sense of reason and purpose. It means doing something important with my life. It's what I am meant to do.

What is your favorite genre of art besides the one you work in: Surrealism.

Do you have art showings, and if so what are they typically like: Yes. I would say my shows have all been very different depending on the venue. It's always interesting to meet other artists and art collectors. I enjoy having an opportunity to discuss art and to hear peoples thoughts about the work.

Do you have a certain set of clothes you make art in: Whatever was on the floor from the night before.

What has been the most frustrating part of being an artist? Any momentary frustration, I might encounter, is overcome by the realization that I am doing what I love to do.

What is your favorite sandwich of all time: BLT on toasted bread with avocado and Pepper Jack cheese. With a pickle spear on the side.

Has this year brought about any changes in your work, and if so what are they: I feel my work is always changing. Sometime subtly and sometimes more obvious. My focus is on producing strong bodies of work.

Who is your favorite artist alive or dead: To name a few, Edward Hopper, Wayne Theibaud, Mark Ryden, Joe Sorren (I LOVE his painting "Portrait of Roger Meanie"!)

What is the most moving piece of artwork that you have seen in person: Anytime I have the opportunity to see works in person it is memorable. I love to see how the work is crafted and that is just not possible with a reproduction.

Do you have any animals, and what do they think of your work: a cat , Louie and an amazon parrot, Joey. They really don't think of my art, they just think "pet me", "feed me", "pet me".

Do you have any upcoming exhibitions you would like to share with us: I am currently showing at HCG Gallery, Summer Selections 2.0. The show runs May 29-June 26, 2010.

Artist Interview: Stephanie Mackenzie

What is your name: Stephanie Mackenzie

Do you have a formal art education or are you a self taught artist: I have a formal Art training from Sheridan College in Ontario which is in Canada.
What is the style of your pieces: The style of my pieces are photography twisted with my imagination into a Digital Art form.
What is the medium in which you work: The medium to which I work is a digital camera along with Adobe Photoshop.
What started you on your path as an artist: When my mother noticed me drawing at age 5, she put my first set of artistic pencils in my hand, it has not stopped.
What is one of the most important things that art has brought to your life: The most important thing that my Art has brought is donating my work and giving 100 percent of the proceeds to charities. An example to one of the charities is 'Love & Action' which the donation went to help the people of Haiti & the people going blind in the mountains of Tibet.
What is your favorite genre of art besides the one you work in: I don't have a favorite genre because I enjoy all types of Art and expression.

Do you have art showings, and if so what are they typically like: I do have showings & they are very enjoyable. I love hearing what people take away from my Art pieces.

Do you have a certain set of clothes you make art in: I would have to say that I don't have a specific set of clothes that I work in yet I do enjoy listening to different types of music to get different feelings of emotion to create my Art.

What has been the most frustrating part of being an artist? I would say that the most frustrating part of being an Artist is getting the first break. Art is such a unique profession because it is based on peoples personal taste.
What is your favorite sandwich of all time: I love a BLT with a large side order of fries.
Has this year brought about any changes in your work, and if so what are they: I am very consistent with my work so I would have to answer no at this time.
Who is your favorite artist alive or dead: I love Richard Avedon, Herb Ritz & David Lachapelle.
What is the most moving piece of artwork that you have seen in person: The most moving piece of artwork that I have seen in person would have to be the Mona Lisa at the Louvre in Paris.
Do you have any animals, and what do they think of your work: Since I don't have a current pet for the moment, there are no comments at this time.

Do you have any upcoming exhibitions you would like to share with us: There are no fixed scheduled exhibitions but they are in process of negotiations.

THE GALLERY
PRESENTS:
Kris Hohlt
Color Outside the Line
You are cordially invited to the
Artist Reception
June 5, 2010 5pm to 8 pm

For all my days I have loved and enjoyed all forms of art. Born in Gilmer, TX and raised all over the south I have been exposed to all kinds of people and places. That makes for a wide range of inspiration and a rich heritage. I can not remember a day that I didn*t create some kind of artistic thing. I love all kinds of mediums and love to explore new and different ways of expressing the vision within. Due to seemingly an endless variety of tools with which one can use I tend to wander through the spacious field of dreams. With each school year brought another art class and new ideas. As I began to explore different mediums I often took specialized classes to learn from those in the know. I have been at TVCC for the last 3 years learning sculpting and ceramics from Beverly Wallace and a host of other clay divas. What fun! I keep and love many gardens of different types. I have played flute for some 30 years. I paint, photograph, sculpt, carve, sketch and design almost any thing. My world is full of eclectic wonderful beauty. Color awes and inspires me, bright bold ones are my favorite, especially red.. I look to the world around me as a jumping off place. This planet is beyond beautiful. My head is full of crazy wonderment that has to go somewhere. I love it when others get pleasure from my stuff, but it is for the sake of release that I work, or play. I find great comfort and joy in letting it out. I love to appreciate the work of others and enjoy a community of very talented artist. Being around other creative people stirs me to create. So from my friends, the very famous and infamous I like to take it in as well.. Give and take makes the world full and rich a good balance, I think..

I have lived in Elkhart with my best friend Bert for 29 years. We raised two children together and have one beautiful grandson. I have been involved in many different aspects of life in East Texas. I am currently a licensed midwife with a small home birth practice, I am also a licensed massage therapist and keep a very small group of clients. I serve on the Anderson County Council on the Arts board of directors where I am learning about Art in a whole new way. Our family attend the Palestine Church where I play flute on the Praise and Worship team. My goal for the future is to be a good wife to Bert, a good Mom to Daniel and Calley and a great Gamma to Logan. To be involved in Art and to enrich the community where we live. I want to paint something, photograph someone or something, form clay into wonderful things and never be satisfied with the status quo, and never ever stop learning! God give us all a teachable spirit. God Bless,
Kris Hohlt

Artist Interview: Marcelo Angel Goycoechea

What is your name: Marcelo Angel Goycoechea

Do you have a formal art education or are you a self taught artist: I am largely a self taught artist/cartoonist. My formal art education came in the late years in High School where during the weekends I attended an intensive college portfolio prep (SATURDAY OUTREACH PROGRAM) course at the famous Cooper Union in New York. There I first learn to draw nudes from life, execute observation drawing of still life's and maintaining a sketch book.

What is the style of your pieces:
I would called it Toon Surrealism and in some piece that would contain adult themes, Toon Erotica- which has an American/European appearance since the cartoons I paint are non-anime or Asian influence.

What is the medium in which you work:
My medium of choice will have to be watercolor however, I don't limit myself into settling with one medium. There is a demand for diversity in a portfolio and although I stay with the same cartooning subjects I have made tons of examples of them in: soft graphite's ( 6B or Ebony), Pen and Ink, colored ink, colored pencil, watercolor pencils, acrylics, pastels, charcoals, conte crayons and markers.

What started you on your path as an artist:
At the age of 15- started of as wanting to be an architect
after originally being inspired by American architect Frank LLoyd Wright. But by 18,I shifted into fine arts and commercial design after largely being exposed and impacted through my first attendance at a senior college art exhibition at Pratt Institute.

What is one of the most important things that art has brought to your life:
That there is place where I contain my random insanity hidden in black portfolio while looking like a normal individual on the outside and that no one gets hurt.

What is your favorite genre of art besides the one you work in:
Cubism which my art teacher was really good at and made me appreciate the style. Another style that I favorably impressed is Western Art. Walter Ufer is a prime example of this genre for his mix of realistic and impressionism elements. I would highly recommend this artist to anyone who is interested in studying this field.

Do you have art showings, and if so what are they typically like:
I only had ONE showing in my adult life at a neighborhood bar only 5 people and a DJ showed up to my opening.

Do you have a certain set of clothes you make art in:
No I don't. I tend to keep my artistic appearance under my sleeves.

What has been the most frustrating part of being an artist?
The process of creating- I've always said, to make beautiful works of art one has to go through the ugly part.it becomes a struggle in trying to flesh out a piece that you can see in your mind but that the eyes falls short in interpreting it. It's also frustrating that it's not what you know but who you know- so be it that you paint like a Velazques or a Raphael, the dude with his self portrait made out of doggie poop on a platter will win a gallery show or that strange girl that saves all of her bleeding tampons to make some crappy abstract sculpture will win headlines across this screwed up piece of spinning rock I call "EARFH" because they know the "who" and I DON"T. But who am I to say what is right and wrong in ART- the fact is, there isn't any which opens to an endless debate which that alone is....frustrating.

What is your favorite sandwich of all time:
Pastrami on Rye with Mustard

Has this year brought about any changes in your work, and if so what are they:
No changes it's pretty much the same.

Who is your favorite artist alive or dead:
Alive: Peter Max. Dead: Salvador Dali

What is the most moving piece of artwork that you have seen in person: I have yet to see a piece that would move me...if there is one painting that I can have a chance to see it in person that would have an impact on me would have to be "Christ of St.John of The Cross" by Salvador Dali.

Do you have any animals, and what do they think of your work:
I have no animals to evaluate my work at this moment.

Do you have any upcoming exhibitions you would like to share with us:
Love, if I did have an upcoming show- I would be dead. (Semone) You will have more and you will be alive.

Artist Interview: David M Nienow

What is your name: David M. Nienow. Also known as “Glamour Dave” in the pool rooms that I find myself in, and “BB” among the group of model clients that I have worked the longest with over the years. When someone asks why I’m called “Glamour Dave” it is because when I am not making glamorous shots at the pool table, I am making glamorous shots of the world’s most beautiful women. And when I am asked about why models call me “BB” it is because I’m Big & Bad when it comes to protecting the interests of my model clients.

Do you have a formal art education or are you a self taught artist:
I have a B.S. degree in Political Science, but I have a great many art classes under my belt while I was going to college. So I do have some formal training in drawing, oil painting, air brushing, and sculpture. But when it comes to the photography that I do professionally, I am completely self-taught.

What is the style of your pieces: When it comes to my photography, I specialize in fitness, fashion, glamour & erotica. Style wise my first & foremost thought is to produce a quality sexy pin-up image. On occasion I also like to produce a more fantasy oriented themed pin-up image. An image that features a model in a medieval or warrior based kind of setting. Those fantasy based images that I create are derived from my life long admiration of certain fantasy artists such as Boris Vallejo, Julie Bell, Frank Frazetta. When it comes to my regular pin-up photography work I have to say that whatever my particular style is, it is continually influenced by my constant reviewing of particular pin-up artists, and fashion photographers.

Pin-up artists that influence me include Gil Elvgren, Alberto Vargas, George Petty, Patrick Nagel, Olivia De Beradinis. My fashion & glamour images are influenced by constantly studying the work of photographers like David LaChapelle, Richard Avedon, Antoine Verglas, Helmut Newton, Patrick Demarchlier, Greg Gorman, Stephen Wayda, Klinko & Indrani, & Chris Thomson. Bill Dobbins is an influence when it comes to my fitness oriented photography.

Other fine art & documentary photographers whose work I admire and study include Thomas Mangelsen, Steve McCurry, Douglas Kirkland, David Kennerly & Camille Seaman.

You can see that I have a wide range of influences when it comes to producing my own photographic images. But I feel that a good artist should always be open to as many outside influences as possible. Because in doing so, you keep your own idea generating machine in your brain active. Ideas just don’t come out of a vaccum.

What is the medium in which you work: Photography is my principal medium. These days I shoot digitally. I use a Canon 30D body with a combination of Canon & Sigma lenses. But I still hold onto my Canon film camera and will still shoot film on occasion. When I do shoot film it will be B&W film, of which I shoot selected Kodak films such as Plus-X 125, T-Max 400 & 3200. And when I can get my hands on It, I will also shoot Agfa Scala 200 B&W slide film.

I also do some graphic design work in support of my own photography & web business. I use Adobe Photoshop every day in editing my photos and doing my graphic design work. It’s taken me quite awhile to get used to the process of creating graphic design on a computer. In my college days, all my graphic design training was still done the traditional way. Using pencils, pens, rulers and paper. And to some degree I still miss that hands on feel of graphic design. But I feel that I have finally gotten a handle on the digital process. But like everything in this arena, this is an area that forever requires you to keep learning.

What started you on your path as an artist: I have always enjoyed art in some form even as a child. I was always drawing cars & cartoons as a kid. I can say that my artistic gene comes from my mother. She has a natural gift for drawing. But there are also some artistic genes coming through on my father’s side as well. I had a great aunt on my father’s line that was a great artist. So art is definitely in my blood. From junior high & onwards I was studying artists such as Leonardo DaVinci, Michaelangelo, M.C. Escher. In high school my parents were able to present to me a nice but used Nikon F3 camera system for Christmas. And up til I started college I did a lot of photography during that time. I spent a lot of time photographing my cousins during their BMX bike racing days. But once I started college the photography came to an end. I had to sell the equipment to cover college expenses. But I pursued other art classes to satisfy my artistic energies.

Once I graduated college however, all artistic energies came to an end while I pursued a career in computer sales. It was during that time that the Internet finally began to become something known to the general public. And once the first web browser was created, I decided that I wanted to learn how to create a web page. So I took it upon myself to learn HTML and began creating a series of fan pages devoted to some of my favorite models & actresses. As a result of that endeavor, it happened that one of the fitness models that I created a fan page around, Tara Caballero, found my page and contacted me by email. And once I was convinced that I was actually dealing with Tara she told me that she wanted to launch her own membership based website and asked me if I would design the site for her. From that point on I became Tara’s official webmaster. After her site was launched in December of 1999, a time came when we needed to produce some additional photo club sets for her members area, after her initial supply ran out that was used to launch her site.

I arranged to have Tara be shot by my best friend Jim Lindstrom who is a pro photographer in Las Vegas. During that photo shoot I acted as a shoot director. Tara decided that I had an “eye” for seeing things and encouraged me to get some camera gear so that I could photograph her. I did just that, and 3 months later I was shooting Tara in San Diego. The results of that shoot caused Tara to make me her official site photographer as well as her webmaster. Having Tara as both a web client & photo client then made it easier to be able to connect with other models in the fitness industry. From that point on I was able to arrange & shoot with other models. And since the models I was shooting were already recognized names in the fitness industry, it also made it easier to get my work published in industry magazines such as MuscleMag, Planet Muscle, and American Curves for Men.

What is one of the most important things that art has brought to your life: Art for me is about being able to view the world in a different perspective. The art that I like to view is that which can amaze me with unique combinations of color & shape such as in well handcraft glass blown art pieces. And in art that can bring a sense of calmness & serenity through the capture of beauty in nature or of the human form. The nature photography of Thomas Mangelsen for example presents many examples of the most magnificent vistas to be found in nature. His images generate a sense of appreciation of what nature offers and in turn you intuitively learn & know that it needs to be protected.

What is your favorite genre of art besides the one you work in: I love a well done painting in oil or done in airbrushing. My favorite painting subjects tend to be pin-up, automotive, western, & space oriented. Fantasy & sci-fi themed subjects are also a favorite. Bronze sculptures of human figure subjects. My favorite sculpture artist is Bill Mack. Blown glass is also a favorite area. I love the blown glass work of artist Chihully.

Do you have art showings, and if so what are they typically like:
I have had the opportunity to participate in 2 group exhibitions. My first group showing was at Echo Gallery in Chicago, in 2005. And I just recently participated in a group exhibition at The Pin-Up Show that took place at Flash Gallery in Lakewood, Colorado, in February & March 2010. I am always on the lookout for new show opportunities. I submit my work regularly to galleries & contests.

Do you have a certain set of clothes you make art in: As a photographer I do wear a photography vest by Domke while I am shooting. It allows me to keep extra lenses, film, filters & other accessories handy. At this point it’s getting pretty tattered and its almost time to get a new one. I will also sometimes wear protective pads over my knees & elbows. When I am shooting a model outdoors, I will sometimes fall to my knees to get a low angle shooting position. So the protective pads help to keep from getting bruised up while shooting. I also wear heavy duty leather hiking boots while shooting outdoors as well. I tend to find out of the way locations that require some hiking. During the winter months when I shoot outdoors, I use a heavy duty bomber jacket to keep warm & leather sheep lined gloves that I have also cut holes in for my shooting fingers to come through so that I can also easily still keep control of my camera.

What has been the most frustrating part of being an artist? Probably the same thing most artists experience, and that is getting proper exposure for the quality work that I produce. And being able to earn a decent income from the work that I produce.

What is your favorite sandwich of all time: The 1st has to be the homemade sub sandwich that my father makes on occasion. They are to die for. The 2nd has to be the Teriyaki burger at Carl’s Jr.

Has this year brought about any changes in your work, and if so what are they: This year has not brought any specific changes to my work specifically. But I am making a more concentrated effort this year at promoting my new line of limited edition posters & prints based from images in my archive. And to also get my work out & seen by more gallery owners & museums. And I am keeping to a regular schedule of getting my work into at least 2 or more photo contests each month. I have began to self publish my own magazine, The Fine Art of Glamour magazine, and a series of portfolio books.

Who is your favorite artist alive or dead: It’s impossible to list just one. I have a lot of favorites in different categories. DaVinci & Michaelangelo are my favorite renaissance artists. Boris Vallejo is my favorite fantasy artist. Vargas is my favorite classic pin-up artist. Patrick Nagel is my favorite modern pin-up artist. David LaChapelle is my favorite celebrity photographer. Thomas Mangelsen is my favorite nature photographer. Richard Avedon is my favorite fashion photographer.

What is the most moving piece of artwork that you have seen in person: In person, I have to say the glass art by Chihully that I have seen during my many visits to Las Vegas. Several of the casino’s have his work located in their facilities. You can never help but be amazed at what you are seeing when you see examples of his work.

Do you have any animals, and what do they think of your work: I have 2 cats. Ms. Pitty Pat & Gracie. They both see fit to try and assist me at my desk while I edit images and do my work. Gracie is a young cat and has yet to gain the necessary maturity to understand any art or how to appreciate it. Ms. Pitty Pat on the other hand is 13 yrs old and is a very mature feline. She deeply appreciates the photographic work that I do, and often gives me her feedback while assisting me at my desk.

Do you have any upcoming exhibitions you would like to share with us:
Currently I do not have any new exhibitions planned. However, I continue to promote my work to various galleries that are seeking artist submissions. If anything new does develop I will make note of it on my professional photography site & professional blog.

Schaffler, President and CEO of The Catholic Foundation. “In this competition’s fifth year, we are more excited than ever to invite local members of the arts community to submit their work to be showcased on the Plaza Art Wall, which is such a wonderful, public showcase of our local talent.”

The Catholic Foundation Plaza is a 3,900-square-foot public space on the grounds of the Cathedral Shrine of the Virgin of Guadalupe, directly across from the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center. Dedicated in 2006, the Plaza was a gift from The Catholic Foundation to the Dallas community to commemorate the Foundation’s 50th anniversary. The Art Wall currently displays last year’s winning piece entitled “Music on Parade” by David Zvanut.

Professional artists living in the North Texas area are invited to submit one original work of art. The winning work will be photographed and installed on the wass and displayed there for one year. The work must be in keeping with the location of the Plaza on the Cathedral grounds but does not require a religious theme.

This year’s Selection Committee includes one representative from The Catholic Foundation and one representative from the Cathedral Shrine of the Virgin of Guadalupe; Cindy M. Gummer, owner of The Enchanted Galleries; Katherine Wagner, CEO of the Business Council for the Arts; Patricia B. Meadows, Art Connections; David C. Hickman, sculptor; Pamela Nelson, Dallas artist; Gary Skotnicki of Architexas, the architectural firm and designer of the Plaza; and David Zvanut, the 2009 competition winner.

For the complete Request for Proposal with all competition details please contact Linda Scheets at 972.661.9792 or lscheets@catholicfoundation.com. For additional information please visit www.catholicfoundation.com.

Chartered in 1955 by a group of dedicated Catholic laymen, The Catholic Foundation is a donor-focused community foundation that guides benefactors in compassionate charitable giving endeavors, utilizing extensive expertise to carry out the various philanthropic goals of its donors. The Foundation’s planned giving programs connects donors directly with organizations they wish to support within the Diocese of Dallas and elsewhere, whether that is a home parish, Catholic school or a community-based charity. Thanks to the generosity of donors both past and present, The Foundation has provided approximately $24 million to local organizations through hundreds of grants over the past 54 years, and donor-advised funds maintained at the Foundation have accounted for even more grants amounting to millions of dollars. Artist Interview: Kurtz

What is your name: Kurtz

Do you have a formal art education or are you a self taught artist: I attempted to go to Southern Methodist University for a degree in art, but was kicked out 2 months later because my professor was a closed-minded idiot. Since I did not paint in any style he was familiar with, he was hostile to my creativity and did everything in his power to keep me out. I consequently devoted myself to following only one teacher. Nature.

What is the style of your pieces: Bold nudity and alchemical unity. Modern art has lost its ability to capture the sensual without being vulgar, the spiritual without the trappings of religion.

What is the medium in which you work:I once worked in oils and canvas, but recently acquired an antique human skeleton. I tried to combine the bones with the canvas and it failed. So I made an 8 foot sculpture of a complete skeleton on the backdrop of Russian-icon inspired coffin, covered in flowers and peacock feathers. I used the rest of the bones to make instruments for my band FRAUSUN.

What started you on your path as an artist: As a child, I would spend my days in my parent's library reading any book that drew my eye. I read about the Impressionists and decided years later to be an artist. It planted the seed.

What is one of the most important things that art has brought to your life: Keeping me calm during the difficulties of life.

What is your favorite genre of art besides the one you work in: Graffiti art. I love it with a passion. Did some tagging years ago and started building these Mondrian inspired murals with Basquiat-type sayings inside of them. Very satisfying, but I prefer the quiet intimacy of a canvas to a concrete wall.

Do you have art showings, and if so what are they typically like: The last art show I had was called the "Anna Nicole Anti-POP Art Show." It happened just after her death. I created 30 POP art prints (a style I hate) and brought them to the show. Before the event, I had numerous threats to my life and protesters at the venue. They felt I was attacking a gay icon, which was not the case at all. I am a major supporter of the GLBT community. I did it as a public curse against her because I did not want her to be the next Marilyn Monroe.

Anything that wasn't sold, was destroyed by the participants. I sold a few, but eventually, I called on visitors to grab the art and begin to rip it apart...which they did, rather violently. It turned into a chaotic experience, with the venue loosing one of their largest corporate sponsors. That was three years ago and up until the past week, I have been blackballed in the art world.

Do you have a certain set of clothes you make art in: I always paint naked without heat or AC. I want to feel the true elements while I work and don't require comforts.

What has been the most frustrating part of being an artist? Trying to get through to the general public what you are expressing. Most people are drooling idiots who have no concept of anything in this world other than what is on TV.

Has this year brought about any changes in your work, and if so what are they:
One year ago this month, I was happily married in a new house with my band recording their album. Lies I had been told for a year and a half came out and both the marriage, my best friendship and my band fell apart. I became suicidal and bought a mask and cloak to take my life in. I eventually got through my pain for various reasons and broke the mask, painted it and started a new music project that combines art and sound into a creation called FRAUSUN. I've since fallen in love with the most beautiful woman I have ever met, am doing gigs all over the Southwest, and recently composed an opera in German in honor my Slave/Lover called, The Dawn.

Who is your favorite artist alive or dead: Gauguin. I saw the Impressionist room at the Boston Museum of Art and it left me speechless.

What is the most moving piece of artwork that you have seen in person: "Where do we come from, what are we, where are we going" by Gauguin in Boston. Knowing he created it with the plans of taking his life after, adds a particular degree of pregnancy to the colors.

Do you have any animals, and what do they think of your work: I have a snake called Little Stars and a German Shepherd named Adolf. My snake has no opinion of my work, but my German Shepherd gets scared when I show him what I've created.

Do you have any upcoming exhibitions you would like to share with us: I'll be a the Wit Gallery on Exposition Drive in Dallas, in early June 2010 for a new series called "Fallen Muse 1-8." It's inspired by my last muse and her inability to remain faithful.

Artist Interview: Marcus R. Thomas aka The Urban Monk

The Zebras ate my left Shoe mixed media

What is your name: Marcus R. Thomas aka The Urban Monk

Do you have a formal art education or are you a self taught artist: 12 years at Central Ohio Art Academy, 10 years at Savannah College of Art & Design

What is the style of your pieces: Post Modern Barbequeism (pronounced- Bar-Be-Q-ism)

What is the medium in which you work: I work in mixed media or I let concept dictate.

What started you on your path as an artist: I told my mom when I was six years old I was going to win this international art competition at school. She laughed, but agreed that if I did she would enroll me in private art lessons. So… I won, and the rest is history.

What is one of the most important things that art has brought to your life: A learned skill and self worth that is rarely found in people today.

What is your favorite genre of art besides the one you work in: Cubism, Futurism, and Russian Constructivism

Do you have art showings, and if so what are they typically like: I have a couple or so a year, but I prefer the term “Art Party”… Zero pretentiousness with good music, drinks, bbq, and most importantly cupcakes. No matter the venue cupcakes are a must. (Semone) Can I have a cupcake...

Do you have a certain set of clothes you make art in: Skull shoes (not actually skulls, but patterns), doctor scrub pants, shirt optional.

What has been the most frustrating part of being an artist? Making money and justifying my prices to non-art people.

What is your favorite sandwich of all time: EASY, Big bacon classic, even though they tried to change it up and call it the Deluxe. It’ll always be the Classic to me.

Has this year brought about any changes in your work, and if so what are they: Yes, I have been on a writing a binge. I currently published one novel Picasso’s Marauders, one book of poetry 3rd Shit Epiphanies: Chronicles of a gas attendant, and I am under going a major project of writing, directing, and art direction on an independent film for release late 2011-2012.

Who is your favorite artist alive or dead: Pablo Picasso. He had his hands in everything and he invented collage. You know you’re good when you can event a new form of art. Plus, he spent the last decades of his life writing plays. Be it good or not, he still did it.

What is the most moving piece of artwork that you have seen in person: Hmmm, that’s a tough one since I don’t really like art all that much. Oops, did I say that? I guess it would be Fantasia the movie. It has always stuck with me.

Do you have any animals, and what do they think of your work: I have no animals, but have lived with several and they are always perplexed by my work, yet seem to respect it. I once had a praying mantis approach my work while I was painting outside. It just stayed for a good hour or so right beside me. That sucker was big enough to hold my paints for me.

Do you have any upcoming exhibitions you would like to share with us: June 11th Bristol Bar in Columbus, Ohio. June 17th “Art in the City” at the Vault Columbus, Ohio, and a show in Joliet, Illinois (T.B.A.), and Chicago Illinois (T.B.A.)
