Linda Sue Price | Enlightened Systems Los Angeles Tag Gallery

Exhibition: May 16 - June 10
Reception: Saturday, May 20, 5-8 pm
Artist Talk: Saturday, June 3rd, 3 pm

TAG Gallery
5458 Wilshire Boulevard
Los Angeles, CA 90036

lindasueprice.com

On May 16th, TAG Gallery will premiere its new location in Miracle Mile with neon artist Linda Sue Price’s solo exhibition “Enlightened Systems.” Price’s show is a reaction to the escalating prevalence of Alt-facts in American and Western culture as a systematized effort to delegitimize truth, and ultimately respect.

Re-claiming vocabulary has been a method for activists to demand respect by creating their own boundaries and place in the world. Intentioned systems with a PR team invert such methods and create confusion. We can see the confusion caused by the inversion of Fake News to represent the delivery of information by mass media.

Price explores this inversion by focusing on weeds and the chemicals that keep them at bay. By using healing plants that can revive, she searches for potential balance and invokes the indigenous Great Plains medicine man, Black Elk’s, quote, “All things are our relatives.” To come to civility by abandoning humanity as a measurement for life.

Price is known for injecting her personal reflections to stimulate emotion and to manipulate how neon is perceived as a medium. All of the work in “Enlightened Systems” will be exhibited entirely on one wall to create a visible system of respect that will confront the viewer.

Linda Sue Price is also currently showing in the group exhibition, “Personal Narrative”, at Annenberg Community Beach House Gallery in Santa Monica and will be included in “Fresh 2017” at South Bay Contemporary’s SOLA Gallery in July.

WHAT IS LEFT BEHIND Stories from Estate Sales PHOTOGRAPHS BY NORM DIAMOND May 20th

Estate sales have become a common way for people to dispose of their parents' possessions after they die or move to assisted living. Over the course of a year, Norm Diamond visited countless estate sales in Dallas, Texas, photographing objects that evoke sadness, humor, and ironic commentary on American cultural history. The resulting images are gathered in Diamond's first monograph: What is Left Behind -- Stories from Estate Sales (Daylight Books, May 16, 2017).

The articles Diamond came upon defy conventional expectations: a science project from 1939, a century-old letter from a rejected lover, and a complete collection of Playboy magazines. Poignant photographs of these possessions reveal clues about otherwise unknowable people. They take on a life of their own, both in the images and in the idea they will now move on to new owners.

Diamond photographed items at the sales, and also bought objects that he took back to his home studio. There he used different lighting and backgrounds to alter or emphasize his interpretation of them. As his spending limit was $25 per purchase, he looked primarily at middle-class or working-class homes that reminded him of his Mid-Western upbringing. It was in these homes that he found the most intriguing things to photograph.

Wedding Night Negligee; Stetsons and Old Spice

In his introduction, Diamond describes how his previous 35-year career as an interventional radiologist helped him choose the items to photograph for this book. As a physician, Diamond would spend hours sifting through hundreds of computer images of each patient's anatomy in search of a few pictures showing abnormalities that, when discovered, could lead to life-saving treatments. This search technique, requiring quick yes/no decisions, aided him with the daunting task of singling out a few interesting items at each estate sale from hundreds of banal articles.

LBJ with Fishhooks; China Painting Palette

Some of the objects evoke Dallas, but it is also the Dallas of 1960, 1972, 1986, each home representing a time capsule. Objects include a plate featuring the face of President Lyndon Johnson with fishhooks on it, an old copy of the
Dallas Morning News with the headline "Thousands Pay Homage to Martyred President," referencing the assassination of JFK, and a closet shelf stacked with Stetson cowboy hats.

At the back of the book, Diamond provides some fascinating, sometimes humorous Endnotes on select images. Among them is one for the Playboy Collection pictured below. He writes: "The man running the sale asked $750 for the entire collection and refused to sell individual copies. That the magazines were spread out on the hearth was not lost on me."

Playboy Collection; Marilyn Puzzle

In her essay, Kat Kiernan writes: "The complexity of a person's life cannot be truly understood from their possessions alone, and Diamond makes no claims to such an understanding. Instead, he gravitates to scenes of sadness, humor, banality and absurdity to present broader ideas of what it means to be human. These unusual scenes, punctuated by price tags, signs, and awkward displays, remind us that when a life comes to an end, it does so with loose ends left untidy."

Dallas Medianale Weekend at TheMAC@GreenZone

The MAC@Green Zone (161 Riveredge Dr. in the Design District) is pleased to be one of the hosts of the Dallas Medianale, a biennial exhibition presented by Dallas Video Association, featuring installations, performances, and screenings of experimental media at several venues across Dallas. The second installment of the acclaimed biennial provides a diverse selection of international and regional artists, presented through a weekend of events Thursday, April 27-Sunday, April 30 and a month-long exhibition and public art installation at The MAC@Green Zone Friday, April 28-Saturday, May 27.

This year's Dallas Medianale programming at The MAC includes audio-visual performances by Kristin Reeves, Limited Hangout, Karine Fleurima (Wikkid_Beat) on Fri, Apr 28, 7-11; the opening of exhibitions by Eve-Lauryn Little Shell LaFountain, Sean Miller, and Ian Haig, Sat, Apr 29, 7-11; and Dallas Ambient Music Nights on Sun, Apr 30, 9-11. La Fountain's Giizis Mooka'am (Sun/Moon Rise), Miller's Machine Biology 2017, and Haig's The Video Hole and Fleshify The World will be on view by appoinment through May 20.

Eve-Lauryn Little Shell LaFountain's work investigates urban indigeneity, ceremony, tradition, landscape, spirits, light, and photographic mediums. Giizis Mooka'am (Sun/Moon Rise) is a 16mm film project made as part of LaFountain's previous series, Waabanishimo (She Dances Till Daylight). The film, with sound by Jon Almaraz, is made in two parts - Giizis Mooka'am: Giiwe (Sun/Moon Rise: She Goes Home), and Giizis Mooka'am: Waabanishimo (Sun/Moon Rise: She Dances Till Daylight) - and will be shown as dual 16mm projections. The titles are in Ojibwa with English subtitles. These films bend time and collapse the space between the artist's current home, Los Angeles, and former home, Santa Fe-the ghost world and the world of the living.

Eve-Lauryn Little Shell LaFountain is a Los Angeles-based multimedia artist from Santa Fe, New Mexico. LaFountain's work investigates her mixed Jewish and Turtle Mountain Chippewa heritage, Feminism, ceremony, history, tradition, and photographic media in the contemporary world. Her films have shown in festivals and venues across the country and abroad, including Ga ni tha on the occasion of the 2015 Venice Biennale, ImagineNATIVE Film and Media Festival in Toronto, and the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian in New York. LaFountain's photography has shown extensively and has won numerous awards, including the Ebner Trophy for International Excellence in Photography, and, in 2010 she was the first photographer to win the Santa Fe Indian Market Best of Classification award. Her first solo museum exhibit was mounted at the Museum of Contemporary Native Arts in the fall of 2015. LaFountain is a co-op member at the Echo Park Film Center, where she teaches 16mm film classes and curates screenings. She holds a BA from Hampshire College where she studied Experimental Film, Photography, and Native American Studies. In the spring of 2014 she received a dual MFA from the California Institute of the Arts in Photography/Media and Film/Video. She currently manages the film school equipment facilities and is teaching alternative photographic processes at CalArts.

Also on display is public art installation, Machine Biology 2017, an application created by artist Sean Miller. Black and White cellular forms rapidly divide, merge, morph, and evolve. This work uses digital feedback and sculpted, chaotic data to produce ever-changing, stroboscopic, microbe-like imagery, while exploring the aesthetics of dynamical systems. The installation will be visible from Ervay Street, displayed in the second floor window of The MAC building.

Sean Miller is an artist working with video, sculpture, installation, live media, performance, and sound art. His work is a synthesis of media, which explores embodiment, dynamical systems, and synesthetic relationships. He is currently teaching New Media and Creative Computation at Southern Methodist University and the University of North Texas, where he received his Masters of Fine Arts in 2014.

Ian Haig works across media, from video, sculpture, drawing, technology based media and installation. Haig's practice refuses to accept that the low and the base level are devoid of value and cultural meaning. His body obsessed themes can be seen throughout a large body of work over the last twenty years. Previous works have looked to the contemporary media sphere and its relationship to the visceral body, the degenerative aspects of pervasive new technologies, to cultural forms of fanaticism and cults, to ideas of attraction and repulsion, body horror, the defamiliarisation of the human body and cartoon abjection.

His work has been exhibited in galleries and video/media festivals around the world. Including exhibitions at: The Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Melbourne; The Ian Potter Museum of Art, Melbourne; The Experimental Art Foundation, Adelaide; The Australian Centre for the Moving Image, Melbourne; Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; Artec Biennale - Nagoya, Japan; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Art Museum of China, Beijing; Museum Villa Rot, Burgrieden-Rot, Germany. In addition his video work has screened in over 120 Festivals internationally. In 2003 he received a fellowship from the New Media Arts Board of the Australia Council and in 2013 he curated the video art show Unco at The Torrance Art Museum in Los Angeles.

Performance artists:
Kristin Reeves has shown her interdisciplinary work internationally in museums, galleries, theaters, art events, and festivals such as the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Microscope Gallery (Brooklyn), and was included in the 26th European Media Art Festival's Best of the Festival program (Osnabrück). She has also collaborated in over 20 multimedia performances including the Tony Fitzpatrick American Trilogy and its epilogue, The Midnight City, at the Steppenwolf Garage Theater. Currently she is an Assistant Professor of Photo/Video/Intermedia Art at Ball State University where she can be found laser cutting 16mm film and managing her always-expanding projector collection. She earned her BFA in Fine Art Photography from Ball State University (2001) and her MFA in Art & Technology from the University of Florida (2012).

Limited Hangout is a collaborative new media project by artists Kyle Evans and Lucas Dimick from Austin, TX. The project explores narrative approaches to experimental electronic music and real-time video performance through animation, noise, and glitch aesthetics. Evans' extensive background in experimental electronic music and new media art practice fuses with Dimick's distinct animation and story telling method resulting in an expressive live performance employing original animated projections, lighting design, textural sound, and voice-over narration. Through this aesthetic, the duo explores concepts ranging from modern western militarization to planed obsolescence and technological waste.

Karine Fleurima (Wikkid_Beat) is a multi-disciplinary Avant-Performance artist. She utilizes electro music, vocalizations, movement, video and interactive media to create distinctive immersive environments. Fleurima investigates themes of cultural displacement and social ambiguity while incorporating elements of cultural cannibalism, Futurism and spiritual exploration. She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Performance Structures & Techniques & Interactive Media from the CUNY BA program at Brooklyn College.

Dallas Ambient Music Nights is a monthly showcase of ambient and experimental electronic music founded and curated by Cody McPhail in January 2015. In the last two+ years, DAMN has been an important outlet for the increasingly vibrant experimental music community in Dallas and has notably paired its group of regular video artists with musicians to create an immersive space for contemplation and communal experience. This will be the 24th installment in the showcase.

Kira Vollman | Ascending Intervals

Opening reception May 13, 6-10pm
On View May 9 - 28, 2017

The Neutra Institute Museum & Gallery
2379 Glendale Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90039

Kira Vollman, longtime contributor and collaborator in both the art and experimental music scene in Los Angeles, will present Ascending Intervals a solo exhibition at Neutra Institute and Museum in Silverlake opening May 13th, 6-10pm.

Vollman is a multi-media artist who mixes painting, photography, sculpture, sound and repurposed scrap to create surreal landscapes and soundscapes, sometimes bringing all of these elements together in one piece. Her exhibition at Neutra can be described as having the ability to transform and transcend. The items she uses in her work, whether it be a mundane home decor item or industrial surplus, scrap metal or tree branches waiting for a chipper, all become about personal transformation. The pieces/installation on view takes as its point of departure the idea of the spaces between—between materials, between structures, between thought and between meaning.

Drawing upon her background as a composer and musician, she often incorporates inter-active sonic elements into her installations and wall sculptures. While the title, Ascending Intervals, refers to a musical term for the intervals of a scale from one note to another, Vollman has appropriated the term as a metaphor for ascension which can be applied politically, spiritually, culturally and personally.

Kira Vollman is a Los Angeles based visual and sound/performance artist who is also the co-owner/director/curator at ARK, an Altadena gallery and performance space. She has performed and exhibited her works throughout Southern California, Europe, and Canada. Vollman has been included in exhibitions at Beyond Baroque, Side Street Projects, Armory Center for the Arts, Sylvia White Gallery and Dangerous Curve. Recently Vollman was interviewed by Kara Tome for GYST Radio.

In addition to creating visual works, Vollman has been active in the local experimental/avant-guard/improv music scene for over thirty five years, both as a multi-instrumentalist and a composer. Non Credo has been Vollman’s main musical outlet with her collaborator and fellow multi-instrumentalist Joseph Berardi.

enters its 29th year and continues to bring the leading national and
international ceramic artists to Northern California for a weekend of
creative instruction and collaboration. Register now at:

This year's conference will feature captivating lectures and hands-on
demonstrations from celebrated artists: Eva Kwong, Lisa Clague, Bar
Shacterman, Kenjiro Kitade, John Balistreri and Dirk Staschke.
Supplementing the weekend already full of ceramics enjoyment are the
fifty exhibitions of ceramic art. The majority of these exhibitions

art and less time finding it!
The John Natsoulas Gallery will hold its annual gallery-wide 30
Ceramics Sculptors exhibition in concurrence with the conference.
The work will be on display from April 15-May 16, 2017. For more

Terror From the Sky - Mark Doty

The Dallas/Oak Cliff tornado of April 2, 1957 killed ten people and injured over 200 with a path of damage that stretched from South Polk Street, through Winnetka Heights, into West Dallas before finally lifting near Arlington Park/Love Field.

At the time it was one of the most photographed and filmed tornadoes that helped lead research in understanding and forecasting these deadly storms.
With the 60th anniversary of the storm approaching in 2017, Mark Doty, Chief Planner with the City of Dallas, is compiling information and stories for a comprehensive account of one of the most remembered, yet overlooked, events in modern Dallas and Metroplex history. Mark will recount the track of the storm with a special emphasis on destruction through Oak Cliff and Winnetka Heights.

Mark Doty, Chief Planner and Historic Preservation Officer for the City of Dallas, is a native of Abilene, Texas. Mark is an alum of Texas Tech University, and after a brief period in Columbia, South Carolina, moved to Dallas in June 2003. He has been employed with the City of Dallas since April 2006. Mark is the author of 'Lost Dallas' and co-author of 'John F. Kennedy Sites in Dallas-Fort Worth.'

This workshop is presented by art photographers, Angilee Wilkerson and Jana C. Perez. The artists' exhibition, Perform La Femme, is on display at the Bath House Cultural Center through April 22.

CLICK HERE for more information about Perform La Femme.

Defining Self is a workshop that addresses topics such as the difference between portraiture and the “selfie,” crafting persona, the photographic truth, posture and performance, and how these topics relate to gender, psychology, fantasy, technology, branding, etc.

The workshop begins with a lecture that addresses a historical overview of self portraiture along with excerpts from contemporary essays on the phenomenon of the “selfie.” Additionally, the artists will review the idea of the gaze, cultural ideals of identity, and how one constructs identity through photography and social media. Following these overviews, a discussion will be generated that asks questions and elicits further dialogue on these topics.

Using photography, students will participate in an exploration of seeing and being seen with an emphasis on posture, persona and performance. The workshop will conclude with a final critique and discussion of the work produced by the students.

Materials needed:

not prepare) artists to work with galleries or to run galleries? How should the MFA best prepare

Cedars Social Mural Dedication to Be Held Thursday, April 6 in Celebration of Dallas Arts Month

Mural Concept for Dallas first container for The Cedars Backyard
EVENT: Cedar Social Backyard "ground·swell" Mural Dedication

WHEN: Thursday, April 6, 5:30pm to 7:30pm

WHERE: Cedars Social Backyard, 1326 South Lamar in the Cedars

BACKGROUND: The Cedars Social will host a mural dedication for its new mural at The Cedars Backyard, Dallas' first container bar, next door to The Cedars Social. The Cedars Social worked with the Creative Arts Center of Dallas to select the winner of "ground·swell", a site-specific 10' x 40' mural on the backside of the container (facing the Dallas Police Headquarters). Dallas artist Rebekah Shamsa was selected by the jurors for the project. Shamsa is a graphic designer who specializes in motion and animation. A graduate of CalArts, she has maintained a passion for working in a variety of mediums outside of computers, including weaving, photography, painting, metal and clay. This is the artist's first mural project.

CAC members were invited to submit up to three total color renderings encompassing the artist's interpretation of the theme. The chosen artist was awarded a $1,000 gift to The Cedars Social as well as a $1,000 gift certificate to the Creative Arts Center. There was also a $500 stipend for materials. Jurors for the project were Todd Hedrick, CAC board member; artist Cynthia Mulcahy; and Jeffrey Yarbrough, co-owner of The Cedars Social.

According to Shamsa, the interpretative, abstract pattern features a series of eyes to remind us we are all accountable and all one. "Using multiple strokes to complete the shapes is suggestive of a current, similar to that which flows unseen in our environments and bodies," said Shamsa. "The downpour of rain from the heavens, the uproar of fire from the earth's core, and the rush of air between are symb
ols for our societies shared opinions and conflicting views. Yet, they intertwine seamlessly."

According to Diana Pollak, CAC's Executive Director, the mural competition is an exciting opportunity for an artist to have their work seen in such a prominent location at the heart of the city. "This public art partnership with a private business will impact the community through its theme, ground·swell," said Pollak. "We were very pleased with all the submissions."

ABOUT CAC: Not only is CAC a visual arts school, it is a thriving arts community for a diverse range of students from teens to seniors. Located on a two-acre campus four miles east of downtown Dallas, the nonprofit community arts organization is geared to beginning, emerging and working artists. Offering more than 500 classes and workshops per year in such disciplines as ceramics, clay sculpture, creative writing, drawing, fiber, glass, jewelry, metal arts, mosaic, painting, photography, printmaking and stone carving, CAC also offers free arts programming to underserved children through programs, such as Art as a Second Language Camp MetalHead and unseenamerica. CAC recently launched ArtAbility, a new program for people with developmental and intellectual disabilities.

ABOUT THE CEDARS SOCIAL: The Cedars Social, located at 1326 South Lamar, is a cocktail den and kitchen that features an adventurous list of handcrafted cocktails and a modern comfort food menu created by executive chef Justin Box. In November, it opened Dallas' first container bar The Cedars Backyard.

Intuition - Brainworks Gallery Los Angeles

Dates: May 6th –27th, 2017

Opening reception:

Saturday May 6th, 2017 5 - 8pm

Brainworks Gallery

5364 West Pico Boulevard.

Los Angeles, CA 90019

www.brainworksgallery.com

“Her Intuition” is an exhibition opening at Brainworks Gallery on May 6, 2017 from 5-8 pm, curated by Erin Adams featuring works by five local female artists. Edi Dai, Yasmine Diaz, Margaret Nielsen, Andrea Patrie and Kristine Schomaker will present new works that illustrates the myriad aspects of intuition. Intuition is defined by researchers as the brain’s ability to draw on internal and external cues in making rapid, in-the-moment decisions and the women in this exhibition take that idea—consciously and unconsciously as a point of departure. The works on view range from non-traditional large-scale oil paintings to collage to video installation as each artist’s choice of medium is also dictated by an innate sense of intuition. The exhibition explores intuition as a methodology and as content and celebrates the fact that these artists work from the gut, and do what they do with knowing confidence.

Edi Dai is a Los Angeles based artists who explores systems of oppression and how they are used to sustain inequality through the act of painting. She embraces commonplace materials to encourage the consideration of our history and how it relates to the matter surrounding us. Cotton is a dominant material in her work and she uses cotton not just to remind us of America’s history of slavery, but also to highlight modern, global forms of slavery which provide cheap products that float inconspicuously into our presence.

Yasmine Diaz is a multidisciplinary artist living and working in Los Angeles. Primarily a self-taught artist, her work for years consisted solely of oil painting and drawing with a focus on urban environments. Currently, her work is shifting to explore gender and broader social and political issues from her vantage point as a Yemeni-American and feminist. Her work has been featured in the BBC News, the Albuquerque Museum of Art, and is on permanent public display at the UCLA School of Public Affairs. She is a 2016-17 at land's edge fellow.

For painter Margaret Nielsen, the journey has been a recurring theme in her artwork. The painter travels through her work and her own psyche, portraying aspects of life with a universal commonality and delving into the mystery of the human condition. Through the use of recurring imagery such as birds, the four elements, and other natural motifs, Nielsen connects the private, intangible world with the external, physical world. Her paintings, often small, jewel-like, and intimate, evoke Jung’s notion of the collective unconscious in that they touch upon experiences common to us all in the journey through life. Nielsen was received a BFA from CalArts and a MA from Loyola Marymount University.

Andrea Patrie is a painter working towards her MFA in Fine Art at California State University Fullerton (2017). She describes her process as very physical and feels painting is an intuitive event, often violent, aggressive and fast pace. In her large-scale paintings color is laid down with trowels, knives and large brushes, only to be later removed. For Patre painting is a place where the outside world falls away; a place where there is no judgment, no rules, but when something does not fit, it clearly makes itself known. Her process is kinesthetic in nature as she believes to be able to feel the pose, the way the figure turns, sets, pushes and pulls is essential to the understanding and the depiction her subjects.

Kristine Schomaker is a new media and performance artist, painter and art historian living and working at the Brewery artist complex in Los Angeles California. She received her BA in Art History and her MA in Studio Art from California State University at Northridge. She works with various interdisciplinary art forms including online virtual worlds to explore notions of online identity and the hybridization of digital media with the physical world. Her current work is part of a new cross-platform project called “An Ode to a Lost Love” whose leitmotif addresses the de(con)struction of self in relation to society’s perception/projection/reflection of beauty. This work focuses on the complexities of gender identity, body image, and the societal privileging of women's physical beauty over character and intellect.
