Artist Registration open for ArtPrize 2011

Venue registration for ArtPrize 2011 closed last Thursday with more than 195 venues.

Artist Registration is open!

The deadline to register is June 16, but organizers urge artists to complete registration right away. Venues are talking to artists now. The best way to get a venue is register early.

Get Ready for the New UICA   

This summer, The Urban Institute for Contemporary Art opens their much anticipated--and much bigger--new building in the heart of downtown. (A small portion was used in 2010 to display Lure/Wave, which won third place.)

The new UICA promises to be in high demand for artists. Again, ArtPrize organizers recommend artists register early and start conversations with venues right away.

2011 NEW BUILDING – CALL FOR PROPOSALS

Deadline May 20, 2011. As part of an ongoing commitment to promote challenging, innovative practices in the visual arts, UICA is seeking exhibition proposals for work that addresses contemporary issues and concerns, and/or work that pushes traditional boundaries in its treatment of materials or subject.


The work being considered for this call will be among the first artwork to be displayed in UICA’s new home, a LEED certified mixed-use building on the corner Grand Rapids’ busiest intersection. A variety of exhibition opportunities are available ranging from traditional galleries, site-specific locations, areas for large suspended work, and a dedicated sound/video gallery.

ArtPrize 2011 Kicks off! Grand Rapids Michigan

Is it that time again?




Why, yes it is. Venue registration opened yesterday, which is when the train leaves the station toward ArtPrize 2011, September 19 - October 9.



Rick DeVos held a press conference where he announced a new Exhibition Center dedicated to music and performance.





New Exhibition Center


Although performance and music have played a small role in the past two events, ArtPrize organizers put a stake in the ground yesterday by announcing a new Exhibition Center dedicated to music and performance.


St Cecilia's Music Center sits in the heart of downtown Grand Rapids, in the Hillside neighborhood. It boasts a 650 seat auditorium. Plans also include two galleries/listening rooms and an outdoor stage.


Top 125, the New Top 25



In the past, we displayed the top 25 artists getting votes for the first week of the event.


To get more people talking about more art earlier in the event, the website will display the top 25 for each of the five neighborhoods.


(We're still planning some arrangement for Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park, the only ArtPrize venue that falls outside the event's boundary.)

Winter in West Michigan is a season of shortened days, grey skies and long, dark nights. For its forthcoming exhibition Beacons, the UICA will embrace winter's darkness in order to showcase the light that artists can bring to bear upon this often bleak time of year. Lighting throughout the facility will be dramatically reduced in order to accommodate works that provide their own luminosity, including but not limited to: film and video projections, light installations, sound installations, images or objects capable of generating their own luminosity.

Call to Artists: Design a 19 Hole Golf Course Michigan

19 Holes: Artist-Designed Mini-Golf

Exhibition: March 4–31

It's time to play at the UICA! This winter we will present an exhibition of artist-designed mini-golf featuring 19 extreme and inventive holes (two nine hole courses with a common tenth, grand finale hole). UICA's mini-golf course will take over all five galleries at our 41 Sheldon Boulevard location.

UICA’s first mini-golf exhibition will occur during the premiere of LaughFest in Grand Rapids. LaughFest is a citywide festival of comedy, performance, exhibitions and film, inspired by the work of Gilda Radner and Gilda’s Club laughfestgr.org. The objective of our mini-golf exhibition is to be a remarkably creative, slightly competitive, laugh riot for families and friends.

Your challenge is to create a single hole for this mini golf course. Artists, designers, and architects are invited to design, build and install holes that respond to and utilize UICA’s floors, columns, hallways, windows, rafters, and more.

Honorarium
If selected to participate in this exhibition, you will receive an honorarium of $150, $300 or $500. UICA’s curatorial committee will award the honoraria based on the wit, creativity, structural integrity, playability, and feasibility of your golf hole.

Wit:  Ideas that awaken amusement and pleasure

Creativity:  Wildly innovative and visually stunning

Structural Integrity:  Must be able to withstand use by thousands of players of all ages and sizes for the full month of March.

Playability:  Mini-golf should be fun, not frustrating. Please design a hole that players can sink consistently in 2-5 putts.

Feasibility:  You will be responsible for the design, construction, maintenance, installation, and de-installation of your piece. Each hole must be designed with barriers to contain stray golf balls. Since the course will be located indoors, we do not want golf balls to become airborne, endangering players and/or our windows.
