Dino Eli Gallery is pleased to present a special performance, Cut and Burst by artist L. Mylott Manning will take place on October 28 at 7pm. Crumbles, chunks and powdered chalk will be removed from Manning’s garment. A composition of cell phone notification sounds, designed by sound artist Michael Durek is choreographed with Manning’s movements. The result is an action based composition and performance. Cut and Burst is an exciting ten-minute piece. Be sure not to miss it. 

In the ongoing exhibition at the gallery "Smash, Crumble and Grind" Manning explores the unspoken tensions of everyday life and psychological spaces through her performances, installations and sculptures. In this recent body of work, the artist is interested in portraying the act of surfacing inward thoughts and the benefits of their release.
 
Manning will wear a garment constructed out of rabbit-shaped chalk pieces and paper during her process-based performance, which takes place throughout the course of the exhibition. She will remove and rub the chalk into powder drawings, shifting the heavy form of the dress into a free and moveable undergarment.
 
In a series of paintings and prints included within the exhibition, Manning examines the contrast between urban textures and country landscapes. Deep investigations of longing, struggle and complexity in relationships are masked with the humor and bright colors employed within these works.
 

L. Mylott Manning received a BFA from Rhode Island School of Design and a MFA from Vermont College of Fine Arts. Her work has been exhibited at: Mobius, Boston, Massachusetts; Port Moody Arts Centre, Vancouver, Canada; Brooklyn Arts Council, New York; Art in Odd Places/Pedestrian Exhibition, 14th Street, New York; the RISD Biennial, curated by Glen Ligon and Lisa Sigal, New York. Her performances have been reviewed by the Associated Press, Boston Globe, Wall Street Journal, Time Out New York, and the Columbia Spectator. Manning has also presented her work at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, as part of Fritz Haeg's Sundown Schoolhouse. L. Mylott Manning is a New York based artist and works from her studio in the Lower East Side.

 

This exhibition is on view at the Dino Eli Gallery, 81 Hestor St. between Orchard St. and Allen St. on the Lower East Side.
