Dallas Cityscape Artist, David Leonard to open in “Art with a View at BarBelmont,”

"Up Broadway," oil on canvas, by David Leonard

Artist’s reception at the Belmont Hotel on Wednesday November 30, 2011, from 6-9pm.  Show continues through January 11, 2012.

Please join Norwood Flynn Gallery for an artist’s reception for David Leonard in “Art with a View” at BarBelmont in the historic, retro-chic Belmont Hotel, Wednesday, November 30, 2011, from 6-9pm.

The artwork of David is perfect for this venue, since some of his paintings depict views of Downtown Dallas, close-ups of the actual view of the Dallas skyline that you can see from the Hotel Belmont’s fabulous patio.  Leonard’s paintings have been called by Jennifer Davis in the Dallas Observer, “…almost ethereal in nature, dodging the dreaded postcard comparison by leaps and bounds, and providing a surprising new outlook on the cityscapes we take for granted.”  Leonard, a 2011 finalist for the Hunting Prize, has shown at Norwood Flynn Gallery since 2008. In 2009, he was named one of the 2009 New Dallas Nine at the Dart Slam at the f.i.g., in Dallas.  His work is in collections throughout the US. He currently lives and works in Austin, Texas.

The Belmont Hotel is located at 901 Fort Worth Avenue, Dallas, Texas.  Visit their website at www.belmontdallas.com.

All shows are free and open to the public.  The public may call 214-351-3318 or visit www.norwoodflynngallery.com for information.

Knight at the Museum Medieval Merriment at the Tyler Museum of Art

Calling all lords and ladies! The Tyler Museum of Art is staying open late for an evening of family fun during “Knight at the Museum,” celebrating the exhibition Object of Devotion: Medieval English Alabaster Sculpture from the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Join us Thursday, November 3 from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. for free art activities, medieval munchies and movies, and appearances by real knights! The evening’s activities are sponsored by Bette Huff King.

All ages will enjoy a wide variety of activities that will be offered throughout the evening inside the Museum. Kids will enjoy three art activities during which they can create their own medieval themed artworks including a one-of-a-kind coat of arms. Take home an original “Fair Lady Hat,” or “Good Sir Knight Helmet,” and create your very own illuminated initial at activity stations in the Bell Gallery. Admission to the exhibition will be free during event hours.

Tyler Paper Arts and Entertainment Editor, Stewart Smith, will introduce a special viewing of the night’s surprise featured film, which will be on view in the Gallery. “The movie I chose is one of those rare, perfect films,” said Mr. Smith, who will reveal the film’s title during his introduction beginning at 6:00 p.m. “It is a timeless piece of cinema that remains as relevant and entertaining today as it did when it was released more than 70 years ago. This is the joy of filmmaking distilled into a single, colorful package.”

Children will meet real knights from the Four Winds Renaissance Faire and can hone their own knightly skills during “Noodle Jousting” sessions. A delicious selection of tasty treats will be provided, including yummy chicken nuggets courtesy of Chick-Fil-A, meat pies from Brookshire’s and homemade gingerbread from the Museum Café.

“We hope ‘Knight at the Museum’ will offer families in our community the opportunity to come into the Museum and experience fine art in a new way,” said TMA Head of Education, Ken Tomio. “This is a great opportunity for parents to introduce their children to the Museum and to also enjoy a fun, free evening together.”

The 60 alabaster panels and free standing figures in the exhibition are drawn from the world’s largest collection of medieval alabasters, that of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. Dramatic and intricately crafted, these pieces are some of the finest examples of the elegant yet neglected art form of alabaster sculpture. “Knight at the Museum” is free, but reservations are appreciated. You can let us know you’re coming by calling the Museum at 903-595-1001. More information is available at www.tylermuseum.org.
Exhibition support for the presentation in Tyler has been generously provided by Lead Sponsor, Amy and Vernon Faulconer. Underwriter is Dr. Harold and Eleanor Cameron. Patrons are Dorothy and Ben Bridges. Contributor is Mary John Spence. Friends are Rebecca and Gregg Davis, Frances and Tommy Swann, Agnes and Frank Ward, and Caroline King Wylie. Collectors’ Circle Sponsors are Julietta Jarvis Foundation, Inc., Bette King, Robert M. Rogers Foundation and The A.W. Riter Family Foundation. Corporate Member Sponsors are Hibbs-Hallmark & Company, KYTX-CBS 19, Sunny 106.5, The Ranch 104.1, and Greg Strnadel & Wells Fargo Advisors.

ArtHash Tutorial: How to Put a String On your Painting. How to put Picture wire on your Artwork. SSemone

In case you do not know the proper method for attaching a picture wire to the back of your canvas, here is a video with all the details.  The standard rule is to put your wire at 1/3 of the length of the painting.  This helps keep all similar size artworks homogenous. If you have a supremely wide thin piece this is not the rule to use-- I will make another video for that!

Hope you all are having a great week so far!

Opening Reception: Thursday, October 13th, 6-9pm
Artist Reception: Friday, October 28th, 6-9 pm
Artist Performance starts at 7pm on Friday, October 28th.

Dino Eli Gallery is pleased to present a special performance, Cut and Burst by artist L. Mylott Manning will take place on October 28 at 7pm. Crumbles, chunks and powdered chalk will be removed from Manning’s garment. A composition of cell phone notification sounds, designed by sound artist Michael Durek is choreographed with Manning’s movements. The result is an action based composition and performance. Cut and Burst is an exciting ten-minute piece. Be sure not to miss it.

In the ongoing exhibition at the gallery "Smash, Crumble and Grind" Manning explores the unspoken tensions of everyday life and psychological spaces through her performances, installations and sculptures. In this recent body of work, the artist is interested in portraying the act of surfacing inward thoughts and the benefits of their release.

Manning will wear a garment constructed out of rabbit-shaped chalk pieces and paper during her process-based performance, which takes place throughout the course of the exhibition. She will remove and rub the chalk into powder drawings, shifting the heavy form of the dress into a free and moveable undergarment.

In a series of paintings and prints included within the exhibition, Manning examines the contrast between urban textures and country landscapes. Deep investigations of longing, struggle and complexity in relationships are masked with the humor and bright colors employed within these works.

45 Fest Art of Guitar at Kettle

$4.8 Million Raised at 2011 TWO x TWO For AIDS and Art Dallas Texas

DALLAS (October 24, 2011) – On Saturday, October 22, the 13th annual TWO x TWO for AIDS and Art benefit dinner and contemporary art auction marked a record $4.8 million in art and luxury packages sold with funds benefiting amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research, and the Dallas Museum of Art.  With a few pieces left to sell on Sunday, the organizers are hopeful to reach $5 million.

Close to 475 people attended the sold-out black-tie event, co-chaired by Tony Award winner John Benjamin Hickey, Joyce Goss and Dr. Gary Tigges and hosted annually by Cindy and Howard Rachofsky at their Richard Meier-designed home, The Rachofsky House.  Art co-chairs for the 2011 event were Janelle and Alden Pinnell.

“This record-breaking year is testament to the generous donations by artists and dealers worldwide,” said Howard Rachofsky.  “The artwork by Mark Grotjahn and its $1 million selling price in the live auction took us over the top.  Both Cindy and I are speechless. The audience and bidders continue to recognize the outstanding work of both these important institutions and put their hearts and money into this event.”

The Saturday evening event included cocktails and a silent auction, followed by dinner, and a live auction conducted by Jamie Niven, Chairman, Sotheby’s, North and South America. There were 121 works of art offered in the live and silent auctions this year.  Artworks by 2011 amfAR honoree Mark Grotjahn as well as Kara Walker, Tony Cragg and Nigel Cooke among others were sold to the highest bidder.  Grotjahn’s work went for $1 million, the highest bid on a single piece of art in TWO x TWO history.

Since its inception, TWO x TWO for AIDS and Art has raised more than $33 million in support of essential AIDS research at amfAR and for the Contemporary Art Acquisitions Fund at the Dallas Museum of Art.  The annual black-tie gala, part of a week-long series of events, is the largest U.S. fundraiser for amfAR and the Dallas Museum of Art.  The funds support amfAR’s AIDS research initiatives and the Dallas Museum of Art’s contemporary art acquisition program and exhibitions.

The fundraising total was announced this morning by TWO x TWO host Cindy Rachofsky at a private brunch hosted by Janelle and Alden Pinnell.  The brunch event was sponsored by Flexjet and held at The Power Station, a not-for profit initiative dedicated to providing a platform for ambitious contemporary art projects in Dallas, TX sponsored by The Pinnell Foundation.

Dallas Museum of Art Hoffman Family Senior Curator of Contemporary Art Jeffery Grove and Cindy Rachofsky, an amfAR board member, addressed the group of invited guests along with Flexjet CEO Fred Reid and amfAR CEO Kevin Robert Frost.  Frost then presented artist Mark Grotjahn with amfAR’s 2011 Award of Excellence for Artistic Contributions to the Fight Against AIDS.

In addition to the record-breaking live and silent auctions at Saturday night’s gala, the evening’s highlight was a special performance by superstar and Grammy Award winner Patti LaBelle.

Celebrity VIPs in attendance were:
Kenneth Cole, amfAR Chairman of the Board
Stanley Tucci, 2011 TWO x TWO Honorary Chair and Emcee and long-time supporter of amfAR and the Dallas event
John Benjamin Hickey, 2011 TWO x TWO Co-Chair, Tony Award winning actor, star in Showtime’s “The Big C”

New Art Fair in the Heart of Miami Beach Created Especially for Emerging Contemporary Artists and Galleries

BURST Project Art Fair is an innovative presentation of contemporary art stretching
from Miami Beach to Miami’s Wynwood Arts District. Featuring painting, surreal pop
art, sculpture, mixed media, photography and video and street art - BURST Project
presents a selection of exceptionally talented rising artists and galleries from around the
world. Additionally, BURST Project is very proud to be able to present new public art
installations from Master Artist Carlos Cruz-Diez.

BURST Project Art Fair is a contemporary art celebration founded by artists Gabriela
Sanchez-Vegas and Rudolf Kohn. BURST Project Art Fair was
created to give emerging artists and galleries an opportunity to present new works
during the annual Art Basel festivities in Miami Beach, and to reach beyond the ‘typical’
gallery confines to present art in public places and new unexpected venues.

BURST is poised to become one of the leading platforms for inspired contemporary art
and emerging artists, and this year’s the debut show is excited to feature a wonderful
mix of superb talent.

BURST / Miami Beach

BURST will be the first major art expo to take place in and around the newly refurbished
Art Deco Center on Ocean Drive. Located in the heart of Miami Beach’s historic Deco
dreamland, major renovations have transformed the historic building into one of Miami’s
best exhibit and event locations. BURST also expands beyond the gallery to include a
contemporary sculpture garden along Ocean Drive in Lummus Park (adjacent to the Art
Deco Center).

BURST / Beyond Miami Beach

Expanding beyond Miami Beach - BURST is pleased to present several public art
installations in Miami’s Wynwood Arts District. This year Miami’s Wynwood District will
also be host to the largest street art exhibit ever. Several emerging artists sponsored
by BURST will be creating original street art in the heart of one the most unique
concentrations of public art ever presented.

BURST on Wheels

BURST is mobile with two double-decker buses that will be completely ‘wrapped’ with
original art from Master Artist Carlos Cruz-Diez. Traveling a special Art Basel route, the
buses will travel between Miami Beach and Miami’s Wynwood Arts District - providing art
lovers a colorful way to easily travel between the art events happening in Miami Beach
and Wynwood.

Bruce Springsteen - Dancing In The Dark

I get up in the evening
and I ain't got nothing to say
I come home in the morning
I go to bed feeling the same way
I ain't nothing but tired
Man I'm just tired and bored with myself
Hey there baby, I could use just a little help

You can't start a fire
You can't start a fire without a spark
This gun's for hire
even if we're just dancing in the dark

Message keeps getting clearer
radio's on and I'm moving 'round the place
I check my look in the mirror
I wanna change my clothes, my hair, my face
Man I ain't getting nowhere
I'm just living in a dump like this
There's something happening somewhere
baby I just know that there is

You can't start a fire
you can't start a fire without a spark
This gun's for hire
even if we're just dancing in the dark

You sit around getting older
there's a joke here somewhere and it's on me
I'll shake this world off my shoulders
come on baby this laugh's on me

Stay on the streets of this town
and they'll be carving you up alright
They say you gotta stay hungry
hey baby I'm just about starving tonight
I'm dying for some action
I'm sick of sitting 'round here trying to write this book
I need a love reaction
come on now baby gimme just one look

You can't start a fire sitting 'round crying over a broken heart
This gun's for hire
Even if we're just dancing in the dark
You can't start a fire worrying about your little world falling apart
This gun's for hire
Even if we're just dancing in the dark
Even if we're just dancing in the dark
Even if we're just dancing in the dark
Even if we're just dancing in the dark
Hey baby

Call for Artists: Crossing Identities – Mexico

 Deadline : November 15, 2011

International ArtExpo is selecting all interesting video/short.films and photo works to include in the next 2011 Exhibition:

Crossing Identities – International Videoart Festival and Photo Exhibition at Terraza

Bugambilias in Morelia, Mexico (December 02 – 04, 2011)

The deadline for applications is November 15, 2011.

The selections will be based on the main concept of “Crossing Identities”. In contemporary society boundaries are getting more and more fleeting, and also the identity, what makes every person or place a recognizable entity, turns out fluid, multiple, making also the cultural, religious, ethnic borders changeable. This change, this mutation has allowed to cross the inside of the identities creating new possible crossings, new blends. And it’s just this “contemporaneity” that makes our civilization conceived as subjected to a process of continuous evolution and cultural hybridization. There is no limit between an identity and the other one any more but it is possible to walk, to cross a passage and to find oneself halfway through it, in a non-place, in a non-identity.

The number of works with which you can participate is unlimited.

All video works must be on DVD (PAL or NTSC), no matter what the original source medium. The maximum length of videos should be 10 minutes.

All photo works on every kind of support are accepted. The maximum dimensions allowed per each image are 150 cm per side.

Send your works submissions with a CV/biography, videography and some still images (only for videoartists) and some samples of photo works (only for artists) to:
