Connie Chantilis just won a Juror’s Choice Award in the Society of American Mosaic Artists’ Mosaic Arts International 2010 exhibit for her large-scale installation grotto.

“We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again. We are in awe of mosaics that fit perfectly into their environments. In order for that bit of magic to happen, there has to be a happy—and intelligent—convergence of the right vision with the right design and the right materials.”

Dear Artists,
Two exciting events are in the works for artists in the 2011 Fine Art in Dallas Book!

1.) A juried two week exhibition at Alan Barnes Fine Art Gallery in the Design District which will coincide with the 2011 Preview Party in November. www.alanbarnesfineart.com

2.) A four week exhibition at Third Space www.thirdspaceevent.com Next to Neiman-Marcus downtown. Date to be announced.

Pages in the book are filling up, so if you haven't sent in your release to secure your place.... now is the time!

One of our own, Anthony Schurba, has recently been diagnosed with cancer and is currently a patient at Parkland Hospital. The prognosis, while uncertain, is not promising. Anthony wants to have a do or die show and has asked me to organize it. I am touched by his request and am extending an invitation to anyone who would like to be a part of this extraordinary event to please let me know. Rachel Davis of OldfieldDavis Gallery will host the event. Plans are underway, as are our prayers.

Arts Incubator of Richardson (AIR) got off to a great start with its kickoff weekend at the Renaissance Hotel during the Wildflower Festival weekend in Richardson. I offer a huge “thank you” to John Klukan, general manager of the Renaissance Hotel, Richardson, and AIR advisory board member, who generously donated the booth space. John believes in promoting the arts and had some interesting discussions with TSA members about hosting potential TSA shows.

AIR is a non-profit organization whose goal is to open a center for the Performing and Visual Arts in Richardson. AIR recognizes the importance of combining the arts and business, and the future center will become a home for vocal and instrumental groups for both rehearsals and performances; live theater; studio space and teaching space for artists; gallery space for local artists’ work; dance studio space; conference rooms for business meetings, and hopefully many other opportunities.

Become a fan of AIR on Facebook and keep abreast on opportunities to become involved in creating a much-needed home for the arts in the north-40.

Diagnosed with Dilated Cardiomyopathy at the age of 20 months, Gabby was given a life-saving heart transplant on March 6, 2007 at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston. She currently undergoes testing and prevention for rejection and other possible side effects. The Children’s Organ Transplant Association fund helps with ongoing transplant related medical costs.

There will also be great food, drinks, music and drawings for raffle prizes. The Exhibit/Art Dash will include artwork by emerging and well known artists, as well as a section of work by artists under 18. There is an element of surprise underlying the event! A donation of $200, or $400 will enable donor to receive a work of art from the corresponding tier. The catch: Attendees will receive bid stickers at the door and place it next to the work they want - if it has not already been claimed with a sticker. If the work has been claimed they can go for another one. Donors won't know who created the artwork until the event ends. The artists' names are revealed once donors pick up the carefully wrapped packages, creating an element of surprise.
The art will be available on-line to view before the event.

Local artists are invited to submit 3 art works for the event. All visual media will be accepted for submission, with the exception of film, video, utilitarian crafts and jewelry. No entry fee required. We understand that artists are frequently asked for donations, so you have the option to choose how much you would like to donate from the sale of your work - from 50-100%.

Artist Information – New Information on Murillo Paintings at SMU Meadows Museum of Art
DALLAS, TX.- Based on new evidence about the systematic looting of art from Jewish owners in the course of hostilities in Europe during World War II, a pair of famous paintings on display at SMU's Meadows Museum created by Spanish master Bartolome Esteban Murillo (1618-1682) of Seville's Patron Saints Justa and Rufina, estimated to be worth more than $10 million, are believed to have been stolen from the Rothschild family in Paris in 1941. The Nazi ERR (Einsatzstab Reichsleiter Rosenberg) code evidencing Rothschild ownership is still visible on the stretcher bar of one of the paintings; it appears to have been rubbed off the other. The Monuments Men Foundation, recipient of the 2007 National Humanities Medal for its work preserving the legacy of these unknown heroes, which it received from the President of the United States at a White House ceremony, is continuing its research to document conclusively whether both paintings were properly restituted to the rightful owners prior to donation to the Meadows Museum.

From The London Times: A Well-Planned Retirement
Outside England 's Bristol Zoo there is a parking lot for 150 cars and 8 buses. For 25 years, its parking fees were managed by a very pleasant attendant. The fees were 1 for cars ($1.40), 5 for buses (about $7). Then, one day, after 25 solid years of never missing a day of work, he just didn't show up; so the Zoo Management called the City Council and asked it to send them another parking agent. The Council did some research and replied that the parking lot was the Zoo's own responsibility. The Zoo advised the Council that the attendant was a City employee. The City Council responded that the lot attendant had never been on the City payroll. Meanwhile, sitting in his villa somewhere on the coast of Spain or France or Italy ... is a man who'd apparently had a ticket machine installed completely on his own and then had simply begun to show up every day, commencing to collect and keep the parking fees, estimated at about $560 per day -- for 25 years. Assuming 7 days a week, this amounts to just over $7 million dollars ...... and no one even knows his name.
