Art in Public Places Unveils Newly-restored, Iconic East Austin Mural

AUSTIN ART IN PUBLIC PLACES UNVEILS RESTORED MURAL AT HOLLY SHORES
Arte Texas recreates iconic East Austin mural with help from neighborhood youth

AUSTIN, TX—June 5, 2018—The City of Austin’s Art in Public Places Program, part of the Cultural Arts Division of the Economic Development Department, announces the restoration of For La Raza, an iconic East Austin mural celebrating the Chicano heritage of the Holly Shores neighborhood. Originally created in 1992 by community muralists Robert Herrera and Oscar Cortez, the mural was recently restored as part of the City of Austin Parks and Recreation Department’s Holly Shores Master Plan, Phase 1 implementation. The project will be celebrated at a free, public event on July 21, 2018, 11 AM – 1 PM at 2215 Riverview Street, Austin, Texas. All are welcome.

“The restoration of this beloved artwork simultaneously honors the history of the Holly Shores neighborhood while also looking towards its future,” said Sue Lambe, Manager of the Art in Public Places Program. “Representing multiple generations and artistic styles, the new mural celebrates the distinguished heritage of the community and reflects its values and character.”

First painted by Herrera and Cortez in 1992, For La Raza is one of several murals sited on the exterior wall of the decommissioned Holly Street Power Plant near the Holly Shores and Festival Beach area in east Austin. Over the years, the mural fell into disrepair, with much of its vibrant imagery—including Aztec gods and symbols of Mexican history and identity— having faded or been painted over or “tagged” by other artists. As part of the Phase 1 implementation of the Holly Shores Master Plan, the Parks and Recreation Department worked with Art in Public Places and the community to identify historic murals at the Power Plant in need of restoration. For La Raza was selected as the first mural to be addressed.

Arte Texas —a community organization working to save historic murals in east Austin and execute new ones, which includes Herrera and Cortez — was commissioned to develop a restoration plan that would once again make the mural a point of pride for the neighborhood. As part of that process, the artists introduced a new generation to the mural painting tradition. In addition to meeting with neighborhood groups and associations, Arte Texas worked with students from the eastside community. Under Herrera’s leadership, the youth were instructed on the process of mural painting and its history and significance in the Mexican-American tradition. They were also given an opportunity to paint sections of the wall, resulting in a unique artistic collaboration blending generations from across the community.

“This mural represents the strength of our people and serves as a cherished cultural expression of our survival as Mexican Americans and Chicanos,” said Bertha Delgado, Founder and Executive Director of Arte Texas.

LINDA SUE PRICE’S NEW MIXED-MEDIA WORKS EXAMINE POWER AND VULNERABILITY

“CONNECTIONS” OPENING AT TAG GALLERY WITH A RECEPTION ON JUNE 16TH, 2018, 5-8 PM
EXHIBIT ON VIEW JUNE 12TH-JULY 7TH, 2018

TAG GALLERY
5458 WILSHIRE BLVD., LOS ANGELES, CA 90036
GALLERY HOURS: TUES-SAT. 11-5 PM

(Los Angeles, California) – TAG Gallery is pleased to feature two bodies of mixed media works by L.A. artist Linda Sue Price. The artist’s works capitalize on an economy of material in reflecting issues surrounding our current socio-political climate. Specifically, Price explores themes of dividedness, interconnectedness, and spiritualism, combining photographic portraiture, chain, textiles representing each of the seven continents, and prominently, the yin-yang symbol made from neon-lit tubing.

In Price’s series Connections, the works’ underlying grid of crowdsourced portraits represents California’s diverse demographics and include those in her Los Angeles community and California residents at large. The artist’s highlighting of differences in race, gender, age, and orientation grounds her works in the traditions of social realism in their emphasis on the ‘average’ Californian. In her series Continents, the works alternately combine indigenous textiles worldwide. Both of the artist’s bodies of work relate humanity’s concerns from local, global, and cosmic vantages.

Price’s works trace current tensions facing humanity and are expressed between optimistic images of family, community, or symbols of culture, and affixed chain link that surrounds each piece. Through the artist’s juxtaposing of photographs and chain links, Price examines borders as objects of both protection and confinement and makes ambiguous the relationships between fragility and strength. Price’s use of the yin-yang symbols are ever-present reminders of the light and dark forces inherent in the laws of nature and invites contemplation about humanity’s role in the small and biggest pictures.

Linda Sue Price lives and works in Los Angeles County, California. Price is known for injecting her personal reflections to stimulate emotion and to manipulate how neon is perceived as a medium. She began studying neon as a medium under Michael Flechtner at the Museum of Neon Art in 2004. There she developed her unique style of bending. Elements of historic neon signs, abstract expressionism, pop art, social realism and graphic design influence Linda Sue Price’s work.

Recent exhibitions include the Museum of Neon Art, Artshare LA, San Joaquin Delta College and Art Exchange in Southern California as well as The Midway Gallery in San Francisco. She has had solo shows at TAG Gallery in Los Angeles. Price shows yearly in a two-person exhibit at the Fine Arts Building in Downtown Los Angeles with Michael Flechtner. Price will be showing at Eastern Projects in Chinatown in July, the Brand Library in Glendale and LA Artcore in 2020. She serves as an advisory board member for the Museum of Neon Art in Glendale, California.

Linda Sue Price has been written about in Los Angeles Magazine, Art and Cake, Diversions LA, We Choose Art, Fabrik Media, Artscene, Santa Monica Mirror, the Daily Times and the Long Beach Post.

Exhibit runs from June 12TH-July 7TH, 2018

VERA BARNETT, HOME:

Vera Barnett developed three distinct series of paintings to embody the meaning of an artistic and domestic life at Home - Portraits, Still Lifes, and Pets. Each series is anchored by a larger thematic painting and surrounded by miniature paintings - all created in a two-step process. First, Barnett fabricates her subject as a stage set made of cardboard, sewn fabric, and found objects. Then, she makes a painting from her construction in a trompe l’oeil manner.

Her series of Portraits represents family life - herself, her son, and grandchildren. Childlike sketches on cardboard easels reference the budding of an artist's self-knowledge. At the age of 3, Barnett decided to be an artist, and still has vivid recall of the drawings she saw and made before entering kindergarten.

Barnett's Still Life paintings embody the things we bring into our home. However, with an irreverent eye, Barnett selects everyday objects which remind her of other things: a pepper under a light bulb becomes a reclining sunbather and a radish becomes a plumed bird.

In the playful series of Pets entitled "When the Cat's Away" we see that our homes are never truly asleep and often beyond our control. Barnett says, "You may own your home, but other life forms share your house. While my husband's cat Taco is asleep, I imagine lively mice beginning to play in a halo of small paintings."

Vera Barnett earned a 4-year certificate at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia in 1981. In the mid-1980's, Vera Barnett and her husband, artist Jack Barnett, moved to Grandview, Texas. This is her third solo exhibition at Valley House Gallery.

TRISH NICKELL, POINTS OF VIEW:

For artist Trish Nickell, life took a dramatic turn when she and her husband, David Szafranski, moved to Paris in 1996. Their planned year in France extended to a stay of 12 years. When they returned in 2008, they settled in Portland, Oregon, influencing Nickell to include views of the Northwest coast along with the French landscapes already inspiring her.

Trish Nickell was born in Dallas, and grew up in the Park Cities, graduating from Highland Park High School in 1965. In 1968, Nickell earned a BA from University of North Texas, and in 1986 a MA from University of Dallas, followed by a MFA in 1988, also from UD. Independent study with artist John Evans was crucial to her development.

About her work, Trish Nickell says:

"Occasionally Nature gifts our eyes with a fleeting moment of beauty. As Pierre Bonnard said, 'Art begins in the sensation of being overwhelmed by the beauty of Nature.' That is where my new paintings begin.

The views I choose to depict are derived from moments when Nature presents itself completely unsolicited with a certain light, a certain combination of colors exploding before me. I see all parts of the field of vision equally and simultaneously. The whole view is unique. It's not about one exceptional area within the whole. These views have a sense of solitude, but that solitude liberates the imagination and invites meditation. They may seem quotidian, but with closer awareness, abundant richness reveals itself.

My friend and mentor John Evans says, 'All my paintings are of worlds where I want to be.' My paintings are also places in which I want to be, and I hope each viewer wants to enter the space depicted. Nature is perfection that cannot be duplicated. However, I take Nature's beauty and expansiveness into myself, allowing it to change and transform my work."

Both exhibitions will be on view through July 7, 2018.

See you Sunday at CADD FUNd. Visit us soon at Valley House!

Contemporary Art Dealers of Dallas Present CADD FUNd 2018

CADD FUNd 2018

Sunday, June 10th
5:00 – 7:30 pm

3015 AT TRINITY GROVES
3015 Gulden Lane
Dallas, Texas 75212

Contemporary Art Dealers of Dallas will again celebrate creativity and community with a Sunday Soup Supper on June 10th at 3015 at Trinity Groves. CADD FUNd will be a fun, fast-paced evening of sharing innovative ideas about potential artistic projects. CADD FUNd will make possible a high-impact idea that needs the support of the DFW arts community.

The idea for the annual CADD FUNd was inspired by similar events throughout the United States such as Feast in Brooklyn, Incubate in Chicago and Spread in Santa Fe. Over the past several years, numerous organizations have taken the basic premise of a Sunday soup dinner - collect creative proposals, invite the public to pay, eat, and listen, and then democratically vote for a winner - and adapted it to their own local purposes.

CADD FUNd 2018 will be awarded to one of these finalists:

Nida Bangash, SMU
Heather Charlet, UTD
Chris Evans, UNT
Barbara Horlander, TCU
Sara Rastegarpouyani, UTA
James Talambas, UTA

The six finalists will be selected from all of the applicants by three esteemed jurors; Amy Lewis Hofland, Director of the Crow Collection of Asian Art; Maggie Adler, Associate Curator of the Amon Carter Museum of American Art; and Phillip Collins, Curator, Scholar, and former Chief Curator at the African American Museum in Dallas.

During the event on June 10th, the finalists will present short proposals for original and yet-to-be-realized new projects. Members of the audience will have an opportunity to ask questions and then the audience participants will vote for their favorite project. Last year’s winner, Spencer Evans, will also give a short presentation during the event. After a short recess to tally the votes, the winner of CADD FUNd 2018 will be announced!

The CADD FUNd is $2500 - $7500 + and beyond. Funds are raised by ticket sales and will go to the winner chosen by the audience.

Tickets are $40 per person and are on sale now.

Tickets will not be available at the door. In an effort to make CADD FUNd 2018 as accessible as possible for the students and artists, $10 of each ticket sold will be applied to jurors’ fees and administrative costs in lieu of charging application fees.

While CADD FUNd is about raising much-needed cash, we hope that it will also be a forum to discuss the many other needs and resources that help make projects happen.

Jieun Beth: Innocence in Silence

Jieun Beth: Innocence in Silence
June 1 - July 7

Opening Reception: Friday, June 1, 7-10pm

Address: 916 Springdale Rd, Bldg 2, #101
Gallery hours: Tuesday - Saturday, 12-6pm

Join us on Friday, June 1 for the opening of Innocence in Silence. Our third exhibition of 2018 features Jieun Beth in a solo show guest curated by Oliver Franklin.

Pairing an image of a shirt with an individual’s obituary, Innocence in Silence portrays the traces of a body and the memory of a personhood. Once used as an expression of individuality and a representation of self, the images and descriptions now remain as a relic and history. It is a reminder of the ultimate vacancy of our body, the influence of perception and the idea of an identity to encourage the reflection of one’s intention in life.

Jieun Beth (b. Texas, 1987) was born in the U.S. and grew up in South Korea, Canada, and France; living in twelve different cities and growing up with diverse influences motivated her artistic direction. She graduated with her MFA in Studio Art at the University of Texas at Austin in 2013 and received her BFA in Painting at the Savannah College of Art and Design in 2009. She explores the idea of personal identity and examines the influence of the body, memory and transience of life on the understanding of one’s identity.

Oliver Franklin has curated storytelling experiences in multiple media for over twenty years. Currently the Director of The Elisabet Ney Museum, Franklin has also worked at the Harry Ransom Center, Republic of Texas Museum, the Museum of South Texas and the Texas Historical Foundation.

Austin joins global cities for Leadership Exchange Program addressing urban affordability for the creative sector

AUSTIN, TX—May 21, 2018—This June, representatives from the City of Austin’s Economic Development Department will join cultural leaders from around the world to explore and address global challenges facing creative communities. Funded by an award from Bloomberg Philanthropies and Google Arts & Culture, staffers from Austin’s Cultural Arts and Global Business Divisions will participate in the first-ever Leadership Exchange Program, an initiative of the World Cities Culture Forum (WCCF) of which Austin is a member. Hosted in Toronto and led by the non-profit creative placemaking organization Artscape, the Exchange will bring together thought leaders from Austin, Amsterdam, London, New York, San Francisco, Sydney and Warsaw. The cities will explore urban affordability for the creative sector and establish global best practices for retaining and growing affordable creative spaces.

“The City of Austin recognizes the affordability crisis facing our citizens, including those in our creative community, and has identified this issue as a key priority,” said Meghan Wells, Manager of Austin’s Cultural Arts Division. “Participation in the Leadership Exchange Program will enable us to address this challenge with an eye toward what is working in other cities and develop creative solutions to add to our strategies and resources.”

Kate Levin, Chair of the Leadership Exchange Jury and program lead for Bloomberg Philanthropies Arts, added, “By creating the opportunity for cities to learn firsthand about the activities and approaches of their peers, the Leadership Exchange Program will advance the unique capacity of the creative sector in addressing civic issues.”

Cities are laboratories for the development of creative solutions. As Mayors around the world invest in cultural projects ranging from cultural facilities and arts programming, to affordable workspace, tourism, engagement and sustainability, the Leadership Exchange Program is an unparalleled opportunity to bring cities together for peer-to-peer learning. Members of WCCF are united in the belief that culture plays a critical role in addressing challenges facing creative communities, and the Leadership Exchange Program will be a catalyst for positive change globally.

CADD FUND 2018 Announces Finalists for June 10th event

Contemporary Art Dealers of Dallas
Present

This year's CADD FUNd will be awarded to one of these six finalists:

Nida Bangash, SMU
Heather Charlet, UTD
Chris Evans, UNT
Barbara Horlander, TCU
Sara Rastegarpouyani, UTD

(TYLER, TX) - Entries now are being accepted for the Sowing Seeds of Peace Visual Art Exhibit as part of the Art of Peace – Tyler celebration, a citywide commemoration of the United Nations International Day of Peace, Sept. 21.
“Art of Peace – Tyler is happy to once again to partner with the Tyler Museum of Art to invite regional artists to offer their creative responses to the idea of peace and to our 2018 theme, Sowing Seeds of Peace,” said Anne McCrady, co-founder and co-director of the peace event.
The visual art show will be presented as a juried exhibit in the museum’s education classroom Sept. 16-23, at the Tyler Museum of Art, 1300 S. Mahon Ave. on the Tyler Junior College main campus. The exhibit will be open to the public and admission is free.

"LA COUNTY ARBORETUM” - A SPECIAL COMMISSION FROM LA METRO TO BRING ART TO THE STREETS

“LA COUNTY ARBORETUM” - A SPECIAL COMMISSION FROM LA METRO TO BRING ART TO THE STREETS

ARTIST KAREN HOCHMAN BROWN COMMISSIONED BY LA METRO TO CREATE WORK FOR THEIR "THROUGH THE EYES OF ARTISTS" POSTER PROJECT FOR DISPLAY ON BUSES AND RAIL MAY 7 TO JULY 1, 2018

POSTER SIGNING AT THE LA COUNTY ARBORETUM ON MAY 15TH, 11 AM-1 PM

(Los Angeles, California) – It has been an eventful year for LA Artist Karen Hochman Brown. The digital artist currently has a solo show on view at The Main in Santa Clarita and the Jewish Federation in Monrovia. She recently concluded her artist residency at the Crain Art Gallery in San Marino, plus she has two upcoming solo exhibitions scheduled at the Museum of Art and History in Lancaster and the California Center for Photographic and Digital Arts in Santa Ana.

Hochman Brown continues the wave of interest in her work with a commission for a poster on the buses and trains of the LA Metro. On view throughout Los Angeles from May 7 to July 1, 2018, the artist’s work weaves imagery of train tracks, aloe blooms, and peacock feathers. Drawing from elements one might find at the Arboretum, Hochman Brown comments, "I was inspired by many non-native species co-existing in harmony, much like the kaleidoscope of people from across the globe who live in Los Angeles County.”

Hochman Brown’s inspired art has redefined the possibilities of abstraction with digital media and continues that development in Shoreline Symmetries at The Main gallery space in Santa Clarita. The artist has departed from purely abstract compositions to examine her techniques among landscapes. To this end, Hochman Brown has envisioned the landscape as hyperreal, otherworldly, and defying of natural phenomena.

In previous work, the artist engaged questions about cultural identity. Her works referenced Judaic iconography with their six-point structures and formed the basis of the artist’s technical, expressive, and conceptual investigations. Currently, Hochman Brown’s subject has evolved to a broader consideration of the natural world and its irreducible makeup of fractal geometries. Comprised of multiple layers of floral imagery, Hochman Brown isolates and pieces together their disparate elements into abstracted kaleidoscopic tapestries. The artist’s painterly process utilizes various digital photographic editing tools and software in her meticulous manipulations of tonality, brightness, and saturation to create an illusion of depth.

Karen Hochman Brown received her B.A. in Art from Pitzer College, has continued to study math, and did post-graduate work at California College of the Arts and Crafts where her master’s thesis introduced Construction Geometry via Art, a Junior High School curriculum she taught at Pasadena Waldorf School. She continued to study the interconnections of math and art via technology at UCLA studying graphic design in late-nineties. Her work has been widely exhibited in California and the United States.

The LA County Arboretum is located at 301 North Baldwin Ave, Arcadia, CA 91007.

Exhibit title: What is the opposite of a computer

As we upload our memories, hopes and dreams in an attempt to escape our mortal flesh, stitching together bits from Instagram/ Twitter/Snapchat to the next hot app of the minute, embedding ourselves to the eternal interwebs - we stare into the flickering blue depths of HEV, a Frankenstein - our avatar stares back and reaches outward for connection. These incorporeal beings are straining for touch, deprived of body and thus of all sense organs. In a state of desolate loneliness, our human desire for meaning is reduced to existential anxiety. With every memory we share digital decay, begins a single bit that changes from 0 to 1, every repost - another two; three bits are flipped and the digital self does not endure. As Hume put it, “nothing but a bundle of different perceptions, which succeed each other with an inconceivable rapidity.”

Scott Froschauer's new solo exhibition confronts divisiveness in America

“ECHO ENIGMA” – SCOTT FROSCHAUER’S NEW SOLO EXHIBITION CONFRONTS DIVISIVENESS IN AMERICA

OPENING AT ARK GALLERY AND STUDIOS WITH A RECEPTION APRIL 29TH, 3-6 P.M.

TO BE FOLLOWED BY:
AN ARTIST TALK SUNDAY, MAY 20TH, 3-5 P.M.
ALTADENA OPEN STUDIOS TOUR, JUNE 3RD 11-5 P.M.
CLOSING RECEPTION ON JUNE 10TH, 2-5 P.M.

(Los Angeles, California) Ark Gallery and Studios is pleased to present a solo exhibit with Los Angeles multimedia artist Scott Froschauer. The artist explores themes of social connectivity, community and complexity. Froschauer gained notoriety with his “The Word on The Street” series of subversively positive street signs.

In Froschauer’s latest exhibit at ARK, the artist reflects on America’s increasingly polarized climate, etching distressed mirrors with portraits of various historical American figures. The artist injects elements that complicate otherwise one-dimensional narratives. He states that, “Deciding how to categorize them becomes more of a statement about the viewer, who is reflected in the distressed surface of each piece.” Hero and villain become blurred in the complex reality of the subjects humanity.

That complexity becomes the underlying fabric of the shows centerpiece. The exhibit’s focal point is a model for a large-scale artwork entitled United Divider that proposes a size of 15 feet tall by 20 feet long. Reminiscent of Richard Serra’s Tilted Arc that infamously overtook Federal Plaza in New York in the 1980’s, the 120-foot-long curved steel panel divided an otherwise open public space and was eventually taken down due to public outcry. Froschauer proposes a monument of polished stainless steel, waving, and etched with the likeness of the American flag. When viewed up close, the flag’s stars and stripes consist of lines of text bearing the names of historical Americans, human beings who we might find ourselves simplifying into heroes or villains, but which are actually more complex. Again, the polished surface reminds the viewer that their impression of these individuals is more of a reflection of their own preconceptions. Froschauer comments, “The epic scale of this piece gives it a stance as a wall, separating those who might stand on either side of it. The reflective quality of the piece denotes that this idea of America is a reflection of all who observe it. The symbol of the flag brings us all together and tears us all apart. It is the United Divider.”

Several related events will follow the April 29th opening from 3-6 p.m. including a May 20th artist talk from 3-5 p.m., an Altadena Open Studios Tour day on 3rd from 11-5 p.m., and a closing reception on June 10th from 2-5 p.m.

Ark Gallery and Studios is located at 2599 Fair Oaks Ave., Altadena, CA 91001

Opening Reception: Friday, April 27, 7-10pm
Address: 916 Springdale Rd, Bldg 2, #101
Gallery hours: Tuesday - Saturday, 12-6pm

In November 2003, 28 artists opened their homes and studios for the first East Austin Studio Tour. The orange house on the corner of east 2nd Street at Waller, with its backyard studio, became a spot that thousands of visitors have returned to each year. A new group of guest artists created exhibits of their art in each room of the house, while the home cooked posole and hospitality of Jennifer Chenoweth's house remained a staple. November 2017 was the last year for Fisterra Studio to participate in EAST in this space, but the annual event had a deep effect on Austin's sense of community and connectedness. This show will feature over 50 guest artists collaborating again to inspire artists and art lovers about the beauty, quality and diversity of visual art in Austin.

Artist J. Fredric May honors stroke month with solo show at CA Center for Digital Arts

Artist J Fredric May shouldn’t be alive to open his solo exhibition during Stroke month. Thanks to his cat, Apparition: Postcards from Eye See You will be on view at the California Center for Digital Arts, Santa Ana in May.

This exhibit traces a fateful moment in 2012 in which May, a photojournalist and film industry professional arrived home after a trip and found it strange for his cat not to greet him. Instead, May heard unusual sounds outside. “In all these years he had never heard or seen his cat act like this. It worried him,” comments May’s wife Lisa. Something unusual was in the air. May pursued his cat high up in his yard’s tree, slipped and fell breaking several of his ribs. In the hospital it was discovered that May was having an aortic aneurysm and a stroke and was able to get help quickly. “It all links back to the cat, who we think had a sense something was wrong, and saved his life” Lisa says.

May became partially blind and diagnosed with Charles Bonnet Syndrome (CBS). What he didn’t lose however was his ever-restless urge to create. May uses his now-skewed vision and has pioneered a unique technical and expressive approach to photography. May’s engaging with both digital and analog photographic processes and consequently aided in May's recovery and has landed him with numerous awards, and upcoming exhibits.

A.M. Rousseau opens solo show at Jason Vass May 5th

May 5 to June 2, 2018
Opening Reception: May 5, 6-9pm
Artist Talk/Book Signing:
June 2, 2-4pm

Jason Vass
1452 E. Sixth Street
Los Angeles, CA 90021

(Los Angeles, California) – Jason Vass is pleased to present Lines of Inquiry, an exhibition of paintings and works on paper by A.M. Rousseau. Rousseau is a multi-disciplined artist, writer and photographer currently living in Southern California who has exhibited her work nationally and internationally. Rousseau’s works are imbued with an investigation of line. She takes her inspiration from a Paul Klee dictum: “Take a line for a walk, aimlessly for the sake of the walk.” She sees each line as a metaphor for the way life happens: one point leading to another, ever changing. For her, “Every line is a reflection of individual will, a unique indicator of purpose and direction, just as in hieroglyphics, a kind of handwriting that can be read if the system of mark making is understood.”

The works on view range from black and white works on paper like Downward Hang, and Left Leaning in which a succession of quasi concentric black lines gracefully flow as if suspended across two supports. The algorithm used in creating these works becomes more complex as Rousseau moves across multiple sheets of paper adding color into the mix. In works like Fire and Ice Quartet and 100 Line Rush Triptych the undulating curves have a wave-like pattern reminiscent of an abstracted ocean. When Rousseau moves from paper to canvas and from ink and colored pencil to acrylic paint, she begins to fill in shapes creating denser compositions where the linear elements originate from a central core.

Rousseau’s lines are both gestural and used to outline geometric forms as in Perspective Collective and Spiral Quartet. Her work has much in common with the timeless quality of ancient Chinese and Japanese calligraphy, at the same time as it is firmly rooted in contemporary art practice as comparisons to works by conceptual artists Sol LeWitt or Robert Mangold are apt as are connections to the works of Julie Mehretu.

A.M. Rousseau received her undergraduate degree from the Massachusetts College of Art and a Master’s Degree in Fine Art from Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY. She is the recipient of a National Endowment in the Arts Fellowship, The Djerassi Foundation Affymax Fellowship, the Rockefeller Foundation’s Bellagio Artist Residency, Yaddo Artist residency, the Virginia Center for the Arts residency, the Manhattan Borough President’s Award for Excellence and Service in the Arts, and the Harc Foundation Award. She has been exhibiting since 1990 including most recently exhibitions at the Upland Museum of Art (2017), the Ruth Bachofner Gallery, Santa Monica, CA (2016), CMay Gallery, Los Angeles and Korea (2015).

Psychic states emerge in L.A. artist Glenn Waggner’s paintings at Neutra Institute
Museum and Gallery
(
Los Angeles, CA) – The Neutra Museum Gallery is pleased to present a solo painting exhibit with L.A. artist Glenn Waggner. The artist capitalizes on painting’s formal language to animate his psychologically-charged scenarios. Minimalistic, Waggner’s paintings optimize the use of color as light that is activated between foreground and
background, or between the subject and its liminal surroundings. The artist’s surprising formal invention is a product of mapping spaces. Their overarching geometries are suspended between abstraction and representation, and
anchored by figures, architecture, landscape, and other recognizable imagery. Waggner credits this to his process of allowing spontaneous gestures to inform the construction of pictorial space and stimulate new formal and narrative relationships. The artist’s
anecdotal titles further contextualize the ambiguous relationships posed. Waggner states, “I ask the viewer to determine their own narrative. Maybe it starts a dialog. The title answers the question or suggests a direction.”Waggner’s work engages numerous nineteenth and twentieth-century painters in the renewed exploration of formal language to articulate human drama and the unconscious.

Among those are the paintings of Edward Hopper and Philip Guston. Waggner was born and raised in Southern California. Growing up in the beach communities, he was immersed in the 1970’s surfing and skateboarding culture. Always drawing and sketching, Glenn has worked in the architectural profession for many years. In the year 2000, Waggner discovered oil painting, taking to its qualities of being a freer and looser medium. It was the perfect fit that allowed art to be made using vivid color and no precise lines. It was “plein air” that helped to capture subject matter quickly and avoided precise detailing, like that required in architecture.

Glenn Waggner’s work won 3rd place in ART + SCIENCE’s 2008 juried show, and was featured in Artscene magazine. Waggner has art is in several private collections.

Another goal of this collaborative project is to draw in new audiences who have never been to (or even heard of) our Cultural Centers and to share audiences who frequent a specific center but have never experienced the others.

Juried by Elizabeth Mellott, Tori Phillips, Jim Burton and Arthur Peña.

Austin Art in Public Places Expands Popular TEMPO Program

Austin Art in Public Places Expands Popular TEMPO Program
Temporary public art program to now include opportunities for muralists

AUSTIN, TX—March 26, 2018—Art in Public Places (AIPP), a program of the City of Austin’s Cultural Arts Division, announces the expansion of TEMPO, its annual temporary public art program. TEMPO provides the community a deeper appreciation of public art through temporary, thought-provoking installations that impact and enhance city-owned sites across Austin. Since 2012, the TEMPO program has commissioned dozens of artists to create outdoor installations. While diverse in material and theme, TEMPO artworks have typically been three-dimensional sculptural installations. This year, AIPP will grow the program to include opportunities for muralists. Through TEMPO 2-D, AIPP will commission seven to ten artists to create temporary murals at select sites across the City. The deadline to apply is April 26 at 5 PM and compensation will be provided for the selected artists.

“This new initiative will enable many additional local artists to participate in the TEMPO program,” said Sue Lambe, Administrator of the Art in Public Places Program. “Honoring the age-old tradition of mural painting, TEMPO 2-D will provide the public with fresh new ways to experience art in the community.”

TEMPO 2-D
AIPP has issued a Request for Qualifications for the TEMPO 2-D program. Selected artists will propose mural designs that will either be hand-painted, digitally-printed vinyl adhesives or temporarily attached panels for locations ranging from public parks to the Austin Bergstrom International Airport, among other sites. Prior to doing any design work, artists will work with the community to develop murals that reflect the character of their chosen location and special consideration will be given to artists with lived experience in the neighborhoods where they are proposing artwork. Funding provided for selected mural projects will range between $2000 and $7000, contingent on the size and complexity of the project. Applicants may review the complete Request for Proposals at www.tinyurl.com/AustinAIPP and must apply online at www.PublicArtist.org, by Thursday April 26, at 5 PM. Artists may learn more about the program at the following meetings:

TEMPO 2-D Artist Information Meetings
Monday, March 26th, 6:30 – 7:30 PM | Dougherty Art Center, 1110 Barton Springs Rd
Thursday, March 29th, 6:00 – 7:00 PM | North Village Library, 2505 Steck Ave

The MAC POP Garden: Go Green | Launch + Happy Hour

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH PROMISE OF PEACE AND TIERRA FIRME,
THE MAC IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE
THE MAC POP GARDEN: GO GREEN
LAUNCH (3-4PM) AT THE MAC
+ HAPPY HOUR (4-5:45PM) AT THE CEDARS SOCÍAL MEXICAN MODERN
SATURDAY, MARCH 17

The MAC goes green on March 17! In partnership with Promise of Peace Gardens and art collaborative Tierra Firme, The MAC is pleased to announce The MAC POP Garden: Go Green launch and happy hour on Saturday, March 17 in celebration of the new education-based natural dye garden. Visitors will learn about the new garden initiative with drop-in tours and art activities for all ages, including a natural dye watercolor demonstration, at The MAC (1601 S. Ervay/entrance at 1600 Gano) from 3-4PM. This garden launch will be followed by a happy hour at The Cedars Socíal Mexican Modern (1326 S. Lamar) from 4-5:45PM, where guests will enjoy exclusive drink specials and complimentary passed hors d'oeuvres, there will be a small raffle benefiting The MAC POP Garden.

As The MAC continues to utilize the ample outdoor space at 1601 South Ervay as a venue to present works of art accessible to all, the organization extends this mission of public engagement with the founding of The MAC POP Garden. The garden will help to revitalize and beautify the neighborhood given that the quarter-mile stretch of S. Ervay St. from The MAC to Downtown has long been vacant. The garden and art are tools to connect people and increase ecological understanding in an urban environment.

The MAC will work with program partners Promise of Peace and Tierra Firme to develop and deliver educational programming. From seed to canvas, participants will learn about each step in the life of a plant, from the origin of a seed, its development over time, and the mature plant's various uses. Through hands-on educational activities on- and off-site, The MAC POP Garden's programming will demonstrate how flowers, roots, and other plant materials can be used to produce natural dyes and works of art.

The MAC POP Garden is created as a place where art, community, and sustainability connect. Community members interested in assisting with the establishment and maintenance of the garden and/or related activities may contact britain@the-mac.org.

ABOUT OUR PARTNERS
Promise of Peace Gardens (POP) transforms vacant spaces into thriving places. POP has built gardens where they deliver programming to children and their families as they explore living a sustainable life. The organization works to grow, harvest and prepare fresh clean food, so children and their families gain access to healthier lifestyles, community involvement and a sense of stewardship for the planet. They have established the Emmanuel POP Garden in partnership with the Emmanuel Lutheran Community Center, the Bayles POP Garden at Bayles Elementary in East Dallas, and a partner garden at Vogel Alcove (across the street from The MAC). POP introduced the "Seed-to-Soul" program at Bayles, which delivers education and hands-on experiences on a weekly basis where teachers and students integrate math, science, literacy and health concepts within the context of the garden.

Tierra Firme is a project-based collaboration between artists Analise Minjarez and Sarita Westrup. As individual artists, their practice is grounded in fibers and sculpture. Their art installations often explore issues of duality, authenticity, cultural geography, and migration. Amongst other projects, Tierra Firme worked in various capacities with the University of North Texas Natural Dye Garden. Analise successfully helped with the procurement of grant funding for the UNT Dye Garden and designed and developed the layout of the functioning garden. Both artists have taught workshops throughout Texas and are passionate about the education of natural dyes and textiles as a powerful medium for creating fine art. Recently, Tierra Firme was awarded the 2017 Arch and Anne Giles Kimbrough Fund Award from the Dallas Museum of Art.

Lawrie Shabibi at Art Dubai Contemporary, 2018

Lawrie Shabibi is pleased to announce its sixth participation in Art Dubai (Booth E10) with a presentation of six artists who explore themes of time, rhythm and return through the analogy of story telling: Hamra Abbas, Farhad Ahrarnia, Mounir Fatmi, Nadia Kaabi-Linke, Zak Ové and Shahpour Pouyan.

The centre piece of the booth will be a floor-based work “Please Do Not Step – Loss of a Magnificent History” by Hamra Abbas – a fantastical marble inlay text that points to the great tradition of story-telling in the Islamic world. Shahpour Pouyan will present ceramic pieces that also explore themes of time and travel.

Nadia Kaabi-Linke, Mounir Fatmi, Zak Ové and Farhad Ahrarnia will each present wall-based works. Kaabi-Linke is known for her canvases of rubbings taken from the reliefs of old walls - eroded by time and marked by history. For Art Dubai she will present a work on canvas from her “Kula” series.

Other works on the booth include a wall sculpture by Mounir Fatmi and a ‘doily’ by Zak Ové. Produced from white coaxial cable and encased in glass boxes, Fatmi’s cables have been intricately manipulated into repeating circles, creating a sense of addition and subtraction – of time moving.

Ové presents a colourful ‘doily’ painting - wonderfully patterned abstract compositions of lace doilies. These are playful reinterpretations of the colours and patterns of the Trinidadian carnival. Continuing the theme of dance and pattern, Ahrarnia’s pictorial works are more subdued but convey images of dancers from the 1920s and 30s embroidered with patterns referencing the textile designs of Sonia Delauney.
