Marty Walker Gallery presents new works by Pard Morrison -a selection of brightly colored aluminum box-like configurations functioning as both painting and sculptures.  Drawing from minimalism and geometric abstraction, Morrison’s new works are allusively active objects resulting from straightforward, structured color, pushing the boundaries between painting and sculpture by adding layered dimensions to the relief forms.

Often compared to Minimalists Donald Judd and Agnes Martin who represent the formal and conceptual influences of his approaches, Morrison captures a complex mixture of surface, process, spirituality and playfulness. Through the use of color contrast and structure, the pieces demand dynamic, rhythmic movement of the eye to seek pattern and rest despite the simplicity of construction. Martin’s influence emerges in the more subtle investigation of spirituality fused with materiality through process where brushstrokes on aluminum reveal the hand of the artist and invoke the fusion of spirit with substance. 

Formally, his new pieces are no longer rigidly divided into rectangular shapes and forms and each turn is a new color combination and an exciting visual experience, betraying the safe perception of its form.  Through the process of ‘patination,’ baking each piece repetitively with multiple colored layers resembling glazed ceramic, Morrison creates what become three-dimensional mathematical game pieces as seen in Tetris or a Rubik’s Cube. Where Judd explores perceptions of negative space and experiences of self within space, Morrison re-defines the form and plays with our sense of volume as we experience the demanding presence of the sculptural pieces and seemingly irrational color patterns installed within a space.  

Pard Morrison received his BFA in Sculpture at Colorado State University, and currently lives and works in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Morrison’s work has been exhibited at the Denver Museum of Contemporary Art, numerous national art fairs, and is also included in the collections of the Armour Foundation, Agnes Martin, the Colorado Springs Fine Art Center, and Wells Fargo Corporate Headquarters, among others.
