Mitch Dobrowner

New Photographs of Storms

Mitch Dobrowner, perhaps the best known storm photographer working today, will be the first featured artist in the new location of Afterimage Gallery, one of the oldest photographic art galleries in the world, established 45 years ago this month in 1971. The exhibit opens September 24 to coincide with the Dallas Art Dealers Association's Fall Gallery Walk. Mr. Dobrowner accompanies storm chasers to collect commanding imagery and then digitally prints the work in a unique, dramatic high contrast style. Most of the photographs in this show are from his latest excursion a couple of months ago. The exhibit ends November 15.

Mr. Dobrowner (born 1956) grew up in New York City and now lives in Los Angeles. He has been photographing for many years and has had numerous exhibits across the country and in Europe. In 2013, the prestigious photographic publisher Aperture produced a monograph simply entitled Storms. His work has been seen in numerous publications, and has been recently shown on National Geographic's website.

Afterimage Gallery opened its doors at this time 45 years ago in the Quadrangle complex in Uptown Dallas. Last April, it moved two blocks to new, elegant quarters at 2613 Fairmount Street, in the same building as David Dike Fine Art. The owner/director, Ben Breard, began the gallery just after completing graduate school with an MS in Communications Photography from Syracuse University's Newhouse School of Journalism.
