Mixed Journeys: Nautical Paths A Solo Exhibition by Connecticut Contemporary Artist, Rex Prescott Walden

On a rocky beach in Guilford, Connecticut, contemporary artist Rex Prescott Walden looks out over Long Island Sound.  His calm demeanor and neatly put-together appearance are in stark contrast to modern conceptions of what an artist should look like.  Here, at his sprawling family compound, Walden looks more the aging J. Crew model than breakthrough artist.

However, moving into his brightly lit studio, old navigational charts and cans of acrylic paint are spread out on antique chart tables.  Typing machine buttons dot the tops of worn wooden counters.  This is the studio of an artist in preparation.  What Walden has been preparing for is a solo exhibition at the Fernando Luis Alvarez Gallery on Thursday, November 4^th. 

The Gallery has exclusively represented Walden, who remains its best-selling artist, since the beginning of 2010, and has featured him in three of its seven shows.  Walden's work is currently in the permanent collection of the Florence Griswold Museum in Old Lyme, CT, and at the brand-new Smilow Cancer Center at Yale New Haven Hospital.  Walden's first solo show at the Gallery, “Non-Applicable,” sold out completely.  Collector Kabir Valencia describes his draw to Walden's nautical-themed pieces as “second nature.”  “His talent is universal and unstoppable.  The appeal of his pieces is reminiscent of old Jules Verne stories; nautical and scientific with a hint of fantasy.”

By using paint, collage, and found objects, his works are saturated with a sense of movement and history.  Old map prints call out navigational paths as adding machine buttons play with conventional standards of dimension, always making the viewer acutely aware of the effervescent nature of Time.

Mixed Journeys: Nautical Paths will be on view at the Fernando Luis Alvarez Gallery at 96 Bedford Street, Stamford, Connecticut through December 14, 2010.  The opening for the show will be held at the Gallery on Thursday, November 4^th from 5pm to 9pm.  An RSVP is required for a first-option private viewing running between 5pm and 6pm; please RSVP to Rebecca Hansen at rhansen@flalvarezgallery.com or 888-861-6791.  The show will be open to the public from 6pm to 9pm, with complementary refreshments and live music.

In January 2011, there will be an exhibition of his watercolors and paintings at the San Angelo Museum of Art and in the Fall of 2011 there will be a retrospective exhibition of his paintings at The Grace Museum in Abilene, Texas. Bob Stuth-Wade has exhibited at Valley House since 1991.

It's Cold, I need Hot Chocolate and Some Good Art

Do you feel like we live in a world where people are unappreciative of original artwork.  Or maybe the people that are appreciative are in the low minority?  I often feel that way, and wonder what can be done to shift the paradigm. I mean if you take a look anywhere you will see cheap art prints-- they lurks around every corner.  Furniture stores have them, small stores in the mall have them, they are in banks, hotels, restaurants and mostly in every home.  I have seen people buy fifteen dollar poster prints and spend $400 on framing.  These same people would never buy a piece of original work for their home or office.  If you don't believe me, the next time you are out spot the places with original art and spot the places where you see a print.  The latter will out number the first tenfold.  The art world caters to a small minority of people with a passion for original work. These days, when every thing is produced for a cheaper cost overseas it is hard for people to understand artwork costs.

Some things to think about:

What can be done to raise awareness that real art is uber fab and cheap prints are drab.

As artists are we helping or hurting the situation by getting into the Giclee business.

Can we start a dialog with our not artist friends-- see what they think and why do they by prints.  Do they even think about it.

Do people spend more time wanting hamburgers than original art.

The Art Mart has always been the place to find a special piece of art for yourself, family, and friends. The Art Mart features the artwork of over 40 local and regional artists featuring wonderful paintings, sculpture, photography, pottery, ceramics, jewelry, cards and other unique creations. The Bath House Winter Art Mart benefits the Bath House Cultural Center's year-round visual and performing arts programs.
