MEDIA ADVISORY
CAC Hosts Live Mural Painting Project to be Held 7.7 at Victory Plaza to Honor Fallen Officers

EVENT: 7.7 Live Mural Painting Project
WHEN: Friday, July 7, 2017 from 4:30am to 4:30pm

WHERE: Victory Plaza outside of WFAA-TV, Channel 8 Studios, 3030 Olive Street, Dallas, 75201

WHAT: In collaboration with WFAA-TV Channel 8 (ABC), Creative Arts Center of Dallas (CAC) will be organizing a community-focused live mural painting project as a way to pay tribute to the four Dallas Police Department officers as well as the DART officer who lost their lives that day. The focus is to give both the general and the arts community a way to pay their respects in a lasting and meaningful way. CAC teaching artists Lynn Armstrong & Katrina Doran have created an interpretative portrait for each of the four DPD officers as well as the DART officer in a way that celebrates each of their lives and allows the community to learn more about them and how each officer lived his life and what they were passionate about. Volunteers will help participants paint the murals and anyone can participate either as a volunteer or as a painter. No art experience is required and all supplies are included.

WFAA-TV will be broadcasting live throughout the day starting with "Daybreak" and in the morning the Dallas Police Choir is scheduled to perform during the morning news show. There are five two-and-a-half hour shifts that artists and others may sign up to serve as volunteers who will help people paint the murals.

BACKGROUND:
Not only is CAC a visual arts school, it is a thriving arts community for a diverse range of students from teens to seniors. Located on a two-acre campus four miles east of downtown Dallas, the nonprofit community arts organization is geared to beginning, emerging and working artists. Offering more than 500 classes and workshops per year in such disciplines as ceramics, clay sculpture, creative writing, drawing, fiber, glass, jewelry, metal arts, mosaic, painting, photography, printmaking and stone carving, CAC also offers free arts programming to at-risk and underserved children through programs, such as Art as a Second Language Camp MetalHead and unseenamerica. CAC recently launched ArtAbility, a new program for people with developmental and intellectual disabilities.
The Creative Arts Center held a mural competition this spring in collaboration with the Cedars Social's new container bar that faces the Dallas Police Department Headquarters employing the "ground·swell,". CAC has completed several live mural painting projects, including a 20' mural for Savor Dallas.
