The Spectacle Society will present a screening of hand-painted and -collaged, animated films by internationally-acclaimed artist Martha Colburn, who will be in Dallas for discussion following the program.

Martha Colburn is based in Queens, New York and Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Her works deploy the language and materials of filmmaking to comment on popular culture, history, politics and sexuality. Her primary focus is on contemporary topics through a montage of techniques combining live action, animation and found footage. She creates elaborately layered collages, works on paper, paintings and installations, writings, and live performances with musicians.

A self-taught filmmaker, Colburn began in 1994 with found footage and Super 8 cameras and has since completed over 60 films. She also exhibits elements from her films and using slide projections and murals to create installations. Over the past twenty years, Colburn has worked with authors including 99 Hooker, Stephen O’Connor, Diana Wagman and others. For the 2007 Sundance Film Festival, she was invited to initiate the “New Frontiers” film and video installation program, with Meet Me In Wichita, and in 2008 she opened the Museum of Art and Design (NY) with a live performance of films and music. In 2013 her film Metamorfoza was invited to participate in the series “Visual Arts” by curator of the Collection de Bruin‐Heijn and was performed by the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. Her works are held in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. She is a 2015 recipient of a Creative Capital Award for film.
